A guide to different types of bets

Types of Bet Betting Guide Featured Image

The average betting punter will walk into the bookies, or open their betting app, and place their money on a single selection or an accumulator for fun on a Saturday. Maybe they will have a dabble with a Lucky 15 when the horse racing comes around, even though they don’t quite fully understand how it works. There’s a whole host of different ways that bets can be placed, I have compiled a list below which can hopefully teach you something that you might not know as of yet.

Single Bet

The most basic and easiest to understand. Pick just a solitary selection, place your money on it, and grab a return if it happens to win.

Double Bet

Self-explanatory. Pick two selections, say Manchester City and Manchester United both to win their matches. If both win, your bet will be a winner.

Treble Bet

A treble has the same principle as a double, however, adding another selection to your bet gives you an increased risk of losing your stake (to state the obvious). You will need all three selections to win to gain a return.

Accumulator

Accumulators are probably the most popular way of betting amongst British punters, especially when it comes to the 3pm matches on a Saturday. Most people will refer to an accumulator as an ‘acca’ and these types of bets consist of a minimum of four selections. The more you add the riskier, but higher potential return. It’s an opportunity to win big from a relatively small outlay.

Trixie

A trixie is a bet that consists of four bets around three selections. It covers the three doubles as well as the treble. If you picked three teams to win, you will need at least a couple to come off in order to secure a return.

Patent

A patent is similar to the trixie, but it also covers the singles. Therefore, you only need one winning selection for a return. However, in reality, you would most likely need a couple of winners to make sure that your return is in profit.

Yankee

A Yankee is the first of a few that are popular among those who regularly bet on the horses. You pick out four horses to win, and you will get a return if at least a couple do so. A Yankee bet consists of doubles, trebles and an accumulator. In total, there are 11 selections.

Canadian/Super Yankee

In this type of bet, you will have five selections picked and there will be a total of 26 bets placed on them. It consists of 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 four-fold accumulator’s and a 26-fold accumulator. You will need two selections to win here for a return from your bet.

Lucky 15

A Lucky 15 is another method of betting which is very popular in the world of horse racing. It’s similar to the standard Yankee, however, a Lucky 15 also covers the singles and bookies will add a bonus to your return if it comes in. A total of 20% if all four selections are winners.

Lucky 31

In a Lucky 31, a total of 31 bets are placed across five selections. The bet consists of 5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 four-fold accumulator’s and one five-fold accumulator. You will get a 15% bonus if four selections win, and a 25% bonus to the winnings if all five selections win.

Lucky 63

In a Lucky 63, a total of 63 bets are placed across six selections. It consists of 6 singles, 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-fold accumulator’s, 6 five-fold accumulator’s and one six-fold accumulator. If five of your picks win, you will get a 20% bonus added to your return. If all six win, you will get a bonus of 33%.

Heinz

A Heinz is a total of 57 bets across six selections, and you will need a couple of them to win in order to get a return from your bet. The Heinz consists of 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-fold accumulator’s, 6 five-fold accumulator’s and one six-fold accumulator.

Super Heinz

A Super Heinz is much different. It is a total of 120 bets across seven selections. It is made up of 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 four-fold accumulator’s, 21 five-fold accumulator’s, 7 six-fold accumulator’s, and one seven-fold accumulator. Similarly to the standard Heinz, you will need a couple of winning selections to gain a return.

Goliath

Goliath is an appropriate name for this type of bet. It’s a total of 247 bets across 8 different selections. It is made up of 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 four-fold accumulator’s, 56 five-fold accumulator’s, 28 six-fold accumulator’s, 8 seven-fold accumulator’s and one eight-fold accumulator.
