Here’s the research behind the bet:
Dortmund vs Paderborn
The Black Yellow are enduring somewhat of a tense period, 2 defeats against league rivals Leverkusen and Gladbach really rocked the boat and only furthered the questions that have been asked of this Dortmund side this season. It looked like things really were going south when Andre Hahn put Augsburg ahead at the weekend but the hosts recovered to run out 3-1 winners. That was the 4th time in their last 4 matches that there had been over 2.5 goals with both teams scoring in all of their last 5.
I’ve been reading up on this fixture from the German perspective and the belief is that Dortmund are taking this game very seriously. With Haaland expected to lead the attack and support from Brandt, Sancho, Reus and Reyna. There’s no room for a sloppy performance here and the BVB boys are expected to make a big statement.
That being said, there is a feeling that Paderborn can cause trouble here. Maybe some of that is evoked by the memory of their incredible performance here during their last Bundesliga campaign. They led 3-0 at half time in a barnstorming first half. Ultimately the hosts drew level but that lapse in concentration and almost arrogance that Dortmund have against ‘smaller’ sides is still prominent. Saying that, Dortmund didn’t mess around in the following match up that season where they ran out 6-1 winners.
If Dortmund are at their best this could be an absolute riot, they’ll be desperate to secure a place in the next round given that their league position has left something to be desired. They are fragile and prone to conceding goals though and the plucky visitors have nothing to lose. They also have shown they can upset the odds, they scored 3 first half goals against Union Berlin away from home in the last round. That’s a Union side who’re just 3 points behind Dortmund too.
Can’t see this being a low scoring game in any way, especially if Dortmund play as strong of a team as is predicted.
Werder Bremen vs Greuther Furth
The second of our German games this evening is another clash between two sides in separate divisions but one that as you can see from the odds of this game, is expected to be a hard fought battle.
The Bundesliga side are priced above evens at home with visitors Furth at 3.6 for this one. It’s no surprise really given Furths solid league performances as well as their excellent performance so far in this very competition. In the last round they scored twice away at Hoffenheim, ultimately beating them on penalties. They’ll fancy another upset tonight as they look to carry on their cup dream.
In the two top divisions only Bayern have taken more points on the road domestically that Furth. They’ve also not failed to score in a single away game, along with Bayern they are the join top goal scorers on the road in the top two divisions, that’s pretty bloody impressive.
Furth play ‘courageous football’ according to the German media and many are tipping them to claim another scalp here. With nothing to fear they’re expected to play their usual style of football, a style which has seen their games average well above 3 goals. American forward Julian Green is on a hot streak too, he’s bagged in 3 straight games with Furth scoring 7 times in those matches.
As for the hosts, they’re still the favourites and obviously posses a strong squad. There are some injury concerns for the them but it looks likely that Kosovo international Milot Rashica will be fit to lead the line in the absence of Nicolas Fullkrug. They’re far from the highest scorers in the Bundesliga but they do average comfortably over 1 scored per game and against a side who aren’t the best defensively they’ll definitely have chances.
With their domestic campaign being underwhelming, Bremen can make the quarter finals of the competition for the 4th straight year here and after their 3-0 success over another second tier side in the last round there is an expectation around them to stamp their authority on the game.
Everywhere I’ve looked my findings and thoughts have been echoed by sources close to this game and I think BTTS is a solid selection.
