Juventus vs Lyon
Here we go then, in order to complete this 50/1 rolling accumulator tonight, we need Juventus to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. They currently trail by a single goal after being beaten 1-0 in Lyon, so a win by a two-goal margin would have us win in 90 minutes, or a 1-0 Juventus win would take us into extra time.
Juventus come into this match after back-to-back defeats domestically but obviously we aren’t going to read too much into that or be put off by it. Juve had the title wrapped up with matches to spare and that meant they had the luxury to rest key players such as Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of tonight’s huge match at the Allianz Stadium where I expect them to turn it around.
These are the kind of nights where Cristiano Ronaldo comes alive, the night’s where he can secure the glory and win the match single-handedly as we’ve seen on many occasions before. Think about his 2008 performance during the final in Moscow, the overhead kick ironically against Juventus which the home fans applauded, and then the hat-trick for Juventus against Atletico Madrid which overturned a two-goal deficit last season… It would be ideal if Ronaldo and Juve have a similar performance tonight.
A stat that bodes well for us tonight is the record for teams who have won the opening leg 1-0 in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Since 2011/12, teams winning the first leg thanks to a 1-0 scoreline have gone W2-D4-L9 when it comes to the return fixture.
I expect it to be a struggle for Lyon who have only played one competitive match in the last 5 months and that was the cup final last weekend against PSG where they lost on penalties. Juventus’ strength at home is something that cannot be ignored. In Europe they have suffered just 5 defeats across their last 63 matches in Turin, dating all the way back to 2004/05.
Paulo Dybala is predicted to start but he faces a late fitness test so fingers crossed that we see him on the pitch tonight alongside Ronaldo. The Argentinian has participated in 41% of Juventus’ goals in the Champions League this season which is a solid level of contribution from him.
Juventus’ last day defeat in their Serie A title-winning campaign was played out by a heavily-weakened team. Sarri has his full attention on Europe as he looks to overturn this deficit against Lyon and help Juventus win their first Champions League since 1996. I’m confident in the Old Lady advancing, I’m picturing a trademark Ronaldo ‘big night performance’ and I’ll be happy to see the likes of Paulo Dybala and Matthijs de Ligt return to the fold.
