Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo
It’s off to Spain for the first part of bet 4 as league leaders Atletico Madrid host a Celta Vigo side who’ve completely run out of steam in 2021.
The hosts come in to this on the back of an 8 game winning run in La Liga, a win tonight would equal their best ever winning run in La Liga and the omens for a title win are excellent. That record winning streak came in 2013/14, the same year they last won the league. They also had 50 points after 19 matches, identical to their current record.
Los Rojiblancos have had a nice break of 8 days since their last game against Cadiz where they ran out 4-2 winners, Luis Suarez found the net twice to continue his fine goal scoring form. That was his 13th & 14th goal since making the switch from Barcelona, make no bones about it he’s still one of the best in the world and his departure from Barcelona had very little to do with his ability. At 34 he’s still energetic, quick and sharp in the mind. He’s got 5 in his last 3 and will lead the line again tonight. Sadly Joao Felix is absent for this one but that doesn’t concern me when El Pistolero is in such good form.
Celta have had a dreadful start to their year, they haven’t managed a win in 2021 which came after a 6 game unbeaten run over Christmas. They’ve completely crumbled and even the return of Iago Aspas hasn’t resurrected their form.
Celta come in to this one without a league win in 5, add in a 5-2 battering by Ibiza in to the mix and you can see why alarm bells are ringing for the visitors. They’ve scored just twice in those 6 league games and have lacked creativity and direction.
Their away form tracks back much further than just this year though. No side has won fewer away games than Celta. They’ve managed 1 win in their 11 games on the road, they’ve also managed to score just 9 goals. With that away form they have to travel to the league’s best home side. That record on the road isn’t a new phenomenon either, Celta have failed to win in 39 of their last 42 away matches! A quite astonishing stat.
At the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico have been insatiable. They’ve won 9 and drawn 1 of their 10 games, scoring 24 times and conceding just 3. Yes, 3 goals conceded at home. It’s an incredible record and with Celta not even averaging a goal per game on the road this looks like a very one sided contest.
I’m sure of anyone’s having a bet tonight they’d be including Atletico and with good reason. Anything other than a home win would be a freak event, let’s home the hosts continue to deliver.
Leeds vs Crystal Palace
This seasons great entertainers, Leeds, host the Eagles who come in to this one after back to back victories against Newcastle and Wolves. Hoping for an end to end affair as is so often the case with Leeds games this season.
Since their promotion, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have seen the highest average number of goals per game in the whole of the Premier League. Their matches have averaged 3.5 goals per game and 71% of their games have seen a minimum of 2+ goals scored.
Equally adept at attacking as they are shaky in defence, their high pressing and risky football has won Leeds plenty of plaudits this season and has made them quite remarkable to watch. Only the current top 5 have scored more goals, however only West Brom have conceded more goals – a perfect illustration of what I’m describing.
Patrick Bamford has claimed the most credit this season, he’s coped much better with the step up than I think most people (including me) had envisaged. He’s got 11 so far this season and he’s been helped out by the likes of Harrison and Raphinha. The latter is a player I’m a huge fan of. Rapid, direct and has a cannon of a left foot on him. He’s bagged in 2 of the last 3 and has been a revelation since his arrival from Rennes.
On to Palace, a side who get unfairly credited for boring games in my opinion. It may surprise you to know that they’re one of the most consistent side for 2+ goals in the PL. Over 1.5 has landed in 82% of their matches this campaign. Their average of 2.9 per game puts them at 7th in the league, yet I rarely see anyone backing them for goals. Probably comes as a result of last year where the games were much more dull.
Away from home they’re always a threat on the counter. Sadly Zaha is out tonight which is of course a miss but against Leeds you’re going to get chances, it’s as simple as that. Away from home this season just 2 of Palace’s 11 matches have had under 1.5 goals and off the back of two wins they’ll fancy another positive result here against a wildly unpredictable Leeds side.
I’d always be comfortable backing goals on a Leeds game, almost regardless of their opponents. Palace can definitely play their part here, going to get my feet up tonight and watch it. Let’s hope for a nice easy tick.
