West Brom vs Derby
What a game this is shaping up to be between two sides who are gunning for the Premier League.
West Brom currently occupy second, after a ropey return they’ve now won their last two games but they know they have no room for error with Brentford putting together an exceptional run in 3rd place. The Baggies ran out 4-2 winners over a rotten Hull side at the weekend. They did look vulnerable at the back though, twice being pegged back by a side who are fighting for relegation and boast probably the worst form in the league. At a glance, West Brom have kept 3 clean sheets in their last five, but there’s more to it than a simple stat like that.
The game against Hull makes it just 3 clean sheets from 20 home matches and with a lot riding on this game for both sides, it should be end to end.
Derby have won 3 and drawn 1 since the return and find themselves just 3 points outside the play offs. With Cardiff taking on Blackburn in what looks like a very winnable game for the Bluebirds; Derby need to find a way to keep the pressure up here and with their current momentum I can see them upsetting The Baggies and at the very least – getting a goal. Both teams have scored in 3 of Derby’s 4 games post lockdown.
Both sides top scorers – Charlie Austin and Chris Martin are fit to start in this one.
Genoa vs Napoli
Genoa are struggling. They’re very lucky that Lecce can’t buy a win right now and therefore they’re keeping their heads just above water by 2 points.
It’s 4 games with no wins since the restart for the hosts, which includes a 4-1 drubbing by Parma and a really poor 2-2 draw with Brescia. Of their 2 home games they’ve taken 0 points, beaten 3-1 and 4-1. Their leaky defence is largely to blame, they’ve shipped 58 goals in 30 matches. The worst defence in Serie A bar Lecce. To make matters worse, club captain and defender Domenico Criscito is still out injured as is starting Stryker Gianluca Lapadula.
Napoli have been impressive since the restart. Their only blip was a 2-0 defeat to Atalanta and to be honest, they were incredibly unlucky not to get something from that game. They created chances and played well but there’s few harder sides to stop than Atalanta.
Napoli are in a battle with Roma and AC Milan to see who takes the two Europa League spots. The race is getting very tight and they need to keep winning, one slip up could cost them dearly and no European football would be catastrophic for this team.
Bologna vs Sassuolo
This game absolutely stinks of goals. What we have here is the two sides in Italy’s top flight with the highest BTTS percentages.
Bologna lead the pack with 77% of their games seeing both teams score, for Sassuolo that is 70%. Bologna have had just 1 game finish 0-0 and Sassuolo only 2. They’re separated in the league by just one point and have both performed well since the restart, this is anyone’s contest.
Bologna somehow came from 1-0 down with 10 men to beat Inter on Sunday, a game where they went to 300/1 in-play to take all 3 points. That made it 3 games in a row as well where both teams scored.
As for Sassuolo, well, they’re absolutely bonkers. There’s been 27 goals in their 5 games since the restart, yes – 27! Both teams have scored in every single one. They’ve shown themselves to be good enough going forward to score 3 against Inter and 1 against Atalanta yet also managed to concede 2 to Lecce and 3 to Verona. They only know how to attack with very little interest in keeping games tight.
Atalanta vs Sampdoria
I just can’t keep myself away from Atalanta at the moment, they’re just so so good. They’ve now won 7 straight games in the league after a 1-0 win over Cagliari last time out. They’ve already beaten Napoli and Lazio since the return and I can’t see Sampdoria putting up much resistance.
Atalanta’s 83 goals scored is a mind boggling number, their games seen an average of over 4 goals per match and they’ve got goals coming from all over the pitch. They’re frightening in full flight and a win here could lift them in to 3rd place.
Sampdoria have eased their relegation fears with back to back wins. They’re now up to 14th and are 7 points above the drop zone. I think this game might take on slightly less meaning for them now. They’re by no means safe but they’ve got much bigger games coming up against the likes of Udinese and Brescia. If they go down early in this one I see little reason for them to bust a gut to get something. They’ll be earmarking this as a game where they won’t take any points with their focus being on the fixtures with teams around them.
They’ve lost 16 of their 30 games this season and have managed just 4 away wins. The dynamic attack of the Bergamo side should be way too much for them here.
Sion vs Basel
It’s been an up and down season for Basel but ultimately, as it stands – somewhat of a disappointing one. They sit 3rd, 6 points behind Young Boys and 8 behind St Gallen. However things are far from over and in such a competitive league, they’ll know that things can change very quickly. One more loss might well mean that it’s over for the Swiss giants but until that moment comes they have to keep winning.
They have no excuses not to be beating Sion. They’ve lost 16/28 this season and have won just 6 games. Since the restart they’ve lost 4 and drawn 1 of their 5 matches, one of which was just 10 days or so ago against Basel. It finished 2-0 but it could have been any score, Basel absolutely pummeled them all game and I’ll be gobsmacked if they don’t get a similar result here.
With Young Boys playing Thun earlier in the evening, they could be 9 points ahead by kick off. Basel will know that a defeat in this one all but ends their hope of a top 2 finish, let alone the title.
