The Group of Death has arrived with group F kicking off tonight in Budapest as Hungary host Portugal in a very important game for the reigning European champions to win. Given the strength of the group it is imperative the Portuguese get off to a perfect start here and pile the pressure on the French and Germans who kick off in Munich a little bit later. Hungary are very much the minnows of the group and I would be thoroughly surprised if they were able to get a point in this group, let alone qualify- especially when you consider they will be without star man Dominik Szoboszlai for the duration of the tournament. The Portuguese have no such issues and boast more or less a full strength squad with Joao Cancelo the only notable absentee who will miss out following contracting coronavirus.
Hungary XI: Gulácsi; Fiola, Orbán, Attila Szalai; Lovrencsics, Kleinheisler, Ádám Nagy, Schäfer, Holender; Roland Sallai, Ádám Szalai
Portugal XI: Rui Patrício; Semedo, Rúben Dias, Pepe, Guerreiro; Danilo, William, Bruno Fernandes; Bernardo Silva, Ronaldo, Diogo Jota
Shots & shots on target predictions
The lack of firepower for the Hungarians combined with a very solid Portuguese backline means I will look to only Portugal players in this market. Probably goes without saying but very difficult not to fancy Cristiano Ronaldo to do the business here. The captain often turns up on the big stage and I fancy him to get off to a strong start this afternoon. Unsurprisingly he was top scorer when qualifying for the competition with 11 goals to his name, only England skipper Harry Kane scored more. He averages over 3 shots on target per game from the 7.17 shots he attempts and looks the prime candidate to register at least a couple on target tonight!
Alongside Ronaldo, I will look to the very impressive Diogo Jota to register a couple on target too for the visitors this afternoon. Jota has been a revelation since signing for Liverpool and although he struggled with injury at times he still finished the season with an impressive 13 goals. His goal to minute’s ratio is up there with the best in the Premier League this season. His record of 6 goals in 14 for Portugal is similarly efficient. He will play in a formidable front 3 alongside Ronaldo and likely Bernardo Silva and I expect them to get some decent opportunities against a relatively mediocre Hungary side.
No official tip from me in the cards market but there are a couple of options that look good value for those wanting to have a punt. Adam Nagy may be a name some followers may recognise with the Hungarian holding midfielder plying his trade in England with Championship side Bristol City. He will be responsible for breaking up play and was the most carded player for Hungary during the qualification for the Championships. He also averages nearly 4 fouls per game for the national team in recent years and priced at 3.75 looks a reasonable shout.
Not expecting a classic with Hungary likely to sit and offer very little from an offensive point of view. Strongly fancy Portugal to have too much quality for them this afternoon and register a fairly routine 2-0 victory.
