With all 24 teams now having played, we now find ourselves at match day 2 this evening where we return to Rome where the Italians host Switzerland this evening. There is a strong argument that the Italians put in the best performance of any team in the tournament thus far in their convincing 3-0 win over Turkey on Friday night. They mustered up a massive 24 shots on the night and completely battered a decent Turkey side which shows what a quality side the Italians are. Roberto Mancini has built a confident, dynamic and efficient Italian outfit and I believe the Azzuri have all the ingredients necessary to go deep in this summer’s tournament. The Swiss meanwhile will be relatively disappointed to have only drawn 1-1 with Wales in their opening game. They were the better side on the day but the same old problem of not being able to finish their chances continues to cost them and they are prone to looking a little toothless in attack.
Italy XI: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Spinazzola; Barella, Jorginho, Locatelli; Berardi, Immobile, Insigne
Switzerland XI: Sommer; Elvedi, Akanji, Schar; Mbabu, Xhaka, Freuler, Rodriguez; Shaqiri; Embolo, Seferovic
Shots & shots on target predictions
As I mentioned in the match preview, the Italians were so dominant in the opening game creating 24 shot attempts, with 8 landing on target. They looked so fluid and confident going forwards and I expect them to get the better of the Swiss here. One man in particular who impressed me with his movement and his goal was Lazio frontman Ciro Immobile. He scored the second goal of the night and mustered up 6 shots on goal with 2 landing on target. He has been prolific for Lazio in recent years but has never really been able to match this form at international level. Under Mancini however he has been given a new lease of life and looks like a man full of confidence. He has scored 4 goals in his last 5 appearances for the national team and I am expecting him to impress once more here. He averages 2.23 shots on target per 90 in recent matches from the 5.29 he attempts which shows he is man who is afforded an awful lot of chances thanks to his exceptional movement. Really fancy him to get a couple on target again tonight as he did against the Turks in the opening game.
For the Swiss I really like the look of Arsenal man Granit Xhaka to get a shot off in this one. He is captain of the National team and plays in a slightly more advanced role and is allowed more freedom to express himself than he is afforded at Arsenal. As you may have seen over the years for Arsenal he is gifted with a wonderful left foot and encouraged to take on long shots, this is also very much the case for Switzerland. He is also a candidate for set-pieces and you could well see him standing over freekicks in and around the box tonight. Just one shot from Xhaka will see this part of selection ticked off and given he has averaged 2.94 shots per 90 for the Swiss in recent matches he looks a really good value pick here.
Probably no surprise to you all that Granit Xhaka looks to be the standout man in the cards market once more. He is the most carded player for Switzerland in 2021 with 3 and has also committed the most fouls. He has a fiery temper and absolutely loves a lunge in to the tackle. Although I am not tipping a card for this BB selection I feel Xhaka at 2/1 looks reasonable value to pick up a yellow card this afternoon for those who fancy a punt in the cards market.
The Italians were just so so impressive on Friday night I find it hard to see beyond them this evening. Buoyed on by a passionate home crowd I expect the Azzuri to have far too much quality for Switzerland and register a fairly straightforward 2-0 victory.
