Rangers and over 2.5 Goals
It looks like Livingston will be facing the impossible tomorrow as they try and get a result at Ibrox against league champs Rangers in the first game of the SPFL season. I’m no Scottish football expert but even I know how good Rangers were last season, going through the entire season unbeaten and finishing an insane 25 points clear of Glasgow rivals Celtic is no easy feat, and Gerrard’s men are odds-on favourites to win the league again this season.
They’ve not lost anyone from their squad this transfer window, and their results from pre-season look really impressive. Did you know they beat Real Madrid 2-1 last week? I know it’s ‘just a friendly’ but that’s got to count for something!
Livingston finished 6th last season, however, they failed to win any of their last 5 league games and I’ve seen they’ve been earmarked by the bookies to struggle. They haven’t been entirely convincing so far this season, only managing 2nd in their league cup group where they embarrassingly lost 2-1 to Alloa Athletic, a team two divisions below them.
Rangers will be raring to go in their first competitive game of the season, and I think they’ll be looking at this one to set the tone for the rest of the season. I can’t see anything other than a Rangers win and I expect them to put a few past this Livingston side.
Dunfermline Draw no Bet
Dunfermline are 2nd favourites for the Championship this season and it’s unsurprising if their League Cup form is anything to go by.
In 4 matches they won 3, lost 1 and scored 13. Enough to get them through to the round of 16 where they’ll face Rangers at Ibrox, a great tie to boost the cash flow I imagine.
I was initially surprised to see Dunfermline 2nd favourites for the title when they finished 4th last season but after doing some digging I found they appointed a new manager at the end of last season and have brought in 10 new players, one of which is Graham Dorrans who you might remember played for WBA in the Prem a few years ago!
Morton had a mixed League Cup. They were awarded a 3-0 defeat in their opener because they couldn’t field a team due to Covid. They then failed to beat non-league East Kilbride, drew with Kilmarnock and narrowly beat Clyde 2-1 in their final match. It wasn’t enough to progress.
Last season they finished 9th out of 10 and had a mixed bag of results against Dunfermline. They played each other 4 times (3 league and 1 Cup). They each won 1 and drew the other 2, let’s remember it was a significantly weaker Dunfermline side.
Morton’s biggest problem last season was scoring goals, they only scored 22 goals in 27 league matches and purely based on their League Cup results it seems that problem might not have been resolved. A total of 3 goals scored in 3 matches and that includes 1 game against non-league and 1 game against League One Clyde.
I can’t see Dunfermline losing. They can clearly score goals while Morton seem to still be struggling in front of goal. I expect Dunfermline to win but I’m taking the safety net of Draw no Bet.
Kelty Hearts Win & Over 1.5 Goals
I said it last week and I’ll say it again, Kelty Hearts will be the team to watch this season in SPFL League Two.
They first took my eye back in May when they were promoted from non-league to Scottish League Two, they won the non-league division two years in a row but were denied promotion in the first year because of Covid. Last season they were only able to play 13 league matches but they scored 40 and conceded 4, winning 12 and losing 1.
They’re up in the big leagues now and although tomorrow is the first league match, they’ve already been punching above their weight in the League Cup. They lost 1-0 to Premiership side Dundee United and lost 3-2 to Championship side Arbroath but they beat League One East Fife 3-0 and beat fellow League Two Elgin City 3-1.
Cowdenbeath finished 9th out of 10 places in League Two last season but they did have an okay League Cup group stage, winning 2 and losing 2, however one of those wins a narrow 3-2 against non-league Brechin City who had 10 men for most of the second half.
I think Kelty Hearts will lay down a marker for what could be a very successful first season in the SPFL. They showed in the League Cup they are not going to be short of goals having scored 8 in 4 matches. I’m predicting a comfortable come win, 2-0 or 3-1.
Stenhousemuir vs Stirling Over 1.5 Goals
It’s back to the SPFL League Two for my next pick, and this one caught my eye while I was checking out the Scottish League Cup results.
I don’t know much about these two teams but I found some interesting stats during my research that I think make this one good value to back. Stenhousemuir from 4 league cup games this season have scored 5 goals and conceded 10, that’s an average of 3.75 goals per game!
The away side, Stirling Albion, shares the same goal per game average from their own league cup run, scoring 8 and conceding 7. They finished last season +10 in goal difference and despite losing their top scorer from last season, Andy Ryan, they’ve still got plenty of goals in the side.
From what I can see there’s not much to separate these two sides in terms of quality, with Stenhouisemuir finishing 6th last season and Stirling Albion one place above them in 5th – but if their form this season is anything to go by I can see there being goals tomorrow. I’ll be backing over 1.5 goals.
