Barcelona v Bayern Munich
The return of the Champions League is always special and this season is particularly special as the fans will be returning to the terraces and I can’t bloody wait!I have a free £5 bet to use so have put together a specially requested treble at cracking odds to add further to the excitement for the evening! We start with an absolute belter of a tie at the Camp Nou where Barca host Bayern Munich and I am expecting a goals fest in all honesty which is very much the norm when these two play.
Bayern games are averaging 4.25GPG already this season which is a continuation of last season where they averaged a ridiculous 4.21GPG across the entirety of a league season. All the big guns are available for the Germans including Sane, Muller, Lewandowski and Gnabry who Nagelsmann has confirmed is fit despite being subbed at HT at the weekend as a ‘precaution’ and I can’t see them not scoring quite a few tonight. The in-form Memphis Depay is expected to start up top for Barca alongside Coutinho and new signing Luuk De Jong for Barca who are struggling a little with injuries at the moment.
The departure of Messi is bound to hurt them but they have still made a very decent scoring start to the La Liga season having notched 7 times across their 3 games and I fancy them to be able to score against a Bayern side who are far from the most convincing at the back.As for corners, well Bayern have averaged 6.25 per game this season as well as 6.97 per game last season which are both well over the 4 we require for tonight.
Barca aren’t quite as prolific but still averaged an impressive 5.71 per game across the course of last season.
Villarreal v Atalanta
We remain in Spain for the second tie of the night as Europa League champions Villarreal host Italian outfit Atalanta in what I expect to be an interesting Group F.Atalanta are a bit mental aren’t they?
Gasperini won’t change his gung-ho style for anybody which makes them extremely interesting to watch and goals a very regular fixture in their matchesThey are a little bit tactically naïve it seems and they were on the receiving end of a few hidings in this competition last season, most notably the 5-0 home drubbing by Liverpool.
However you would always back them to score given their forward talent with the likes of Duvan Zapata and Josip Ilicic, Luis Muriel is unfortunately missing with injury. No surprise they had one of the most consistent BTTS records in Italy last season with it featuring in 63% of their fixtures. Only 3 sides in the whole of Serie A had more consistent records.Villarreal meanwhile who are coached by Europa League king Unai Emery are similarly erratic. They actually had the best BTTS record in the whole of La Liga last season with 66% of their fixtures seeing both teams score.
We finish on corners where we need just 3+ from each side this evening. Luckily both sides comfortably average over that mark both this season and in the previous season which is a good omen.Villarreal averaged 4.24 corners per game throughout the duration of last season and are averaging 4.33 so far this season.Atalanta averaged 5.29 corners per game throughout the duration of last season and are averaging 5.33 so far this season.
Chelsea v Zenit
We round the evening off at the home of football, Stamford Bridge where I expect my boys to tear it up once more as they take on Russian outfit Zenit tonight. We have looked different class this season and given the strength in depth we have I expect us to challenge on all fronts this season both in England and in Europe.
We are reigning champions after-all and I have little doubt we will be able to see off relative European minnows Zenit here. The signing of Lukaku has completely transformed us an attacking force and we now have a genuine number 9 who can both hold the ball up and score at a rapid rate.He has started in prolific fashion, as I expected with 3 goals in his 3 league appearances so far and looks to be on the top his game. Strongly fancy him to notch once more tonight.
As for Zenit, they may dominate in Russia but the Champions League is a different level and they tend to struggle, especially when playing away from home. They managed just 1 point from their 6 group games last season as they finished comfortably bottom of Group F and I don’t hold out much hope for them in Group H this time around.Chelsea are sure to dominate the ball and I fancy Zenit to get frustrated and pick up at least a couple of bookings here. They averaged 2.17 cards per game in the UCL group stages last season and playing against a clearly dominant team like Chelsea, I expect at least a couple of bookings for the visitors tonight.
