The game will be played at Wembley in front of an expectant 22,500 crowd who will expect England to win and in all honesty so do I. England have all the ingredients to have a very strong tournament and anything less than the semi-finals would be seen as a disappointment in my eyes. They will be hoping to get off to a perfect start here against an ageing Croatia side with 3 points and a convincing performance.
England XI: Pickford; Walker, Stones, White, Chillwell; Rice, Phillips; Foden, Mount, Grealish; Kane
Croatia XI: Livakovic; Vrsaljko, Vida, Caleta-Car, Barisic; Brozovic, Kovacic; Rebic, Modric, Perisic; Petkovic
Shots & shots on target predictions
Although I expect England to have the majority of the game, Croatia certainly still pack a punch and have the ability to sucker punch England just as they did back in 2018. Perisic was on the scoresheet that day as he scored the equaliser and he is a man who continues to flourish on the international stage.
His international record is impressive with 28 goals to his name where he is still as impressive as ever in the second-striker role. He has averaged an impressive 1.57 shots on target per 90 in his recent appearances for Croatia from the 4.03 shots he takes on which illustrates he is a player who is afforded many chances. He looks as good a shout as any to do the business for us from a Croatian point of view, let’s just hope he doesn’t kill our dreams again as he did in 2018.
For England I will be looking to the man of the moment Mason Mount to do the business for the three lions. Not so long ago Mount was something of a laughing stock in English football and branded a teacher’s pet by many in the media as he managed to always get starts for Southgate despite not playing particularly well. Times have certainly changed in the past 12 months or so; Mount is now a UCL winner and was undoubtedly the standout player for a very impressive Chelsea side this season.
For me, alongside Kane, he is the only guaranteed starter in this England side and I expect him to feature prominently this summer. He has developed in to a very inventive and dangerous player in the final third and has really improved on his end product this season. His shooting stats are very decent where he averages 1.13 shots on target per 90 for England from his over 3 shot attempts and I expect his clever movement in and around the box will afford him at least a couple of decent chances this afternoon.
Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic will play in the defensive midfield role this afternoon and be responsible for marshalling the countless quality attacking players that England possess. He is something of a destroyer and will play behind both Modric and Kovacic in a bid to protect them to allow them to play and try to hurt England from an offensive point of view. He developed into an important player for Inter, particularly towards the end of the season as they went on to win the Scudetto. He averages a fairly hefty 2.57 fouls per game for Croatia which further proves he is a player who is encouraged to break up play and make fouls if necessary. Do feel he looks the perfect candidate to pick up a yellow at Wembley this afternoon.
Hopefully, England have learnt their lesson from the 2018 defeat and won’t take Croatia lightly here. They are massive favourites and rightly so and I do believe we have too much quality for an ageing Croatian side to cope with. It will be nervous but we should get the job done in a 2-1 win. COME ON ENGLAND!
