Italy are many peoples ‘dark horses’ for the tournament and rightly so. Their squad has serious quality with the likes of Lorenzo Insigne, Ciro Immobile, Marco Verrati and of course, Champions League winner – Jorginho.
Along with that they’ve got the energy of Federico Chiesa, Nicolo Barella and Domenico Berardi. Anchoring it all down they’ve got the stalwarts Chiellini and Bonucci, who’ll have confidence in Gianluigi Donnaruma behind them too. Their squad looks to be a perfect mix of experience and flair.
Winning the group should be a breeze for them. Turkey are the only real threat and at most I can only see them taking a point off the Italians.
A part of the same group as Italy, you can chalk that up as one loss right away when they meet.
Along with Italy, there’s the Swiss who qualified ahead of a superb Denmark side and have a much higher average calibre of player than Wales. Sure they don’t have a superstar like Bale, but I feel as if Wales have very little outside of that (sorry Wales fans). I just can’t see where Wales are getting points in that group, they’d be lucky to scrape 2 points at an absolute push. I’d be pretty confident that both Turkey and Italy beat them relatively comfortably.
Yes they upset the odds at Euro 2016 to go as far as they did but I’m afraid I can’t see lightening striking twice here.
Many peoples pick of the tournament will yet again be Belgium. They boast some of the biggest talents at Euro 2020 and will likely be one of the highest scorers this summer, especially with Romelu Lukaku leading the line. KDB is likely missing for the opening game but I don’t see that holding them back, they’ve got more than enough creativity with the likes of Carrasco & both Hazard brothers.
Anything other than the semi final would likely be deemed a failure for this Red Devil’s side. Only Denmark have the ability to give them a tough game. They’ve beaten Russia comfortably on two occasions in recent years.
On to the Finns and to be honest they’re probably just happy to be here. Along with Hungary & North Macedonia they’ll definitely be the whipping boys of Euro 2020. I’d love to say I believe this plucky underdog could cause a stir, but I simply can’t see it.
I fear for the destruction both Belgium & Denmark could cause. Even Russia are far superior in quality to Finland. Pukki is their talisman and he couldn’t hack the pace in the Prem. Finland are pretty adept at beating poorer nations but have struggled against sides of similar standard and rarely ever compete with this of higher stature. I’d say a maximum of 1 point is very likely for the Scandinavians.
The tournament favourites and my number one pick for the trophy. If you gave me £100 to place on a winner it would be the World Cup holders.
Their squad is phenomenal. The list of players they’ve left at home could make a squad good enough to compete for the trophy, never mind the starting 11 they’ll likely use. With Benzema back in action, the one critique of Les Bleus is now null, they’ve got a world class goal scorer to feed off the creativity of some of the most gifted players on the planet.
Yes they’ve got a hard group, but they’re still the best side in it. I’m not blown away by the Germans and Portugal – albeit with a good squad, don’t score an awful lot of goals. This France squad are very well in tune with one another and the togetherness will carry them far and compliments their ability on the pitch.
Is this the most obvious bet of Euro 2020? Probably. Is it a good bet? Absolutely.
The group of death is all about which of the 3 big guns make it through, for all to have their best chance they all need to beat Hungary and ideally do so pretty comfortably in order to have some added security for a potential 3rd placed finish.
Hungary have been on a decent run in the lead up to this tournament however they’re about to take a massive step up in terms of their competition. They’ve been beating sides like San Marino, Hungary and Andorra. There’s a couple of talented players in the squad but to say they don’t get close to the other 3 sides would be a huge understatement.
You’d be lucky to recognise 3 names in the Hungary squad and that would be the players based in Germany, aside from that there’s very minimal quality.
I expect the big dogs to put poor Hungary to the sword. The bigger the score lines the better for France, Germany and Portugal so expect no mercy in this group.
