Fresh from a last-gasp loss in Porto in their first Champions League knockout fixture since 2017, Arsenal must now pick themselves up from that disappointment as Newcastle visit the Emirates this Saturday evening.

There will be no love lost between these sides after their fixture at St James’ Park earlier this season where Anthony Gordon’s controversial winner condemned the Gunners to their first loss in the Premier League in 2023/24.

That seemed to be the start of Newcastle’s push back towards the Champions League places but injuries have hampered that effort for Eddie Howe’s side, who find themselves in eighth place, 12 points adrift of Aston Villa in fourth.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are third in the league, five points behind Liverpool, though they have a game in hand on the Reds. This looks set to be the closest title race in years with three genuine contenders who could all be within two points of each other after this weekend’s results, so Arsenal will know they need to win here.

Newcastle have proven to be a real thorn in Arsenal’s side in recent years though, and with the rest advantage this could be a cracker of a contest and one which looks ripe for a bet.

Paddy Power‘s welcome offer of £50 in free football bet builders, is a great one to snap up ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.

Arsenal vS Newcastle Predicted Lineups

Just one change for Arsenal

Arsenal’s disappointing midweek loss is unlikely to cause Mikel Arteta to make any radical changes. He subbed off Leandro Trossard late in the game, pushing Kai Havertz to striker and bringing in Jorginho, and that is expected to be his starting lineup for this game. Few, if any, of the players on the Arsenal bench have been able to make a case for inclusion here, and with Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko not quite ready to come back in, expect Jorginho’s inclusion to be the only change.

Arsenal vs lverpool

No alternatives for Howe

Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth was also a disappointing result, but similar to Arteta, Eddie Howe has few options to change his team if he is not happy with the results. Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak are both out, meaning Anthony Gordon will likely reprise his role as a makeshift striker, with Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almiron making up the front three. This game will come too early for Joe Willock, and Joelinton and Nick Pope remain out with longer term injuries. With a week’s rest for all the players, expect an unchanged lineup here.

Arsenal vs Newcastle Team Stats

Arsenal heavily favoured in the corners markets

Only Manchester City have had more Premier League corners than the Gunners, Mikel Arteta’s side having racked up 188 compared to City’s 192. That works out to an average of 7.52 per game, whilst today’s opponents Newcastle concede 5 per game. Arsenal have had at least six corners in five of their last six Premier League games at the Emirates, the one exception coming against title rivals Liverpool. They also took 11 corners when these two sides met earlier in the season. Therefore, backing them to have over 5.5 corners at 1.29 looks a solid way to start an Arsenal vs Newcastle bet builder.

Dubravka likely to be busy

Newcastle’s defence has struggled this season, resulting in lots more work for their goalkeeper. Martin Dubravka has stepped up in the absence of Nick Pope, but he would certainly hope to be facing fewer shots than he has been recently. In eight of Newcastle’s last 10 games, Dubravka has been forced into four or more saves. Dubravka made eight and nine saves in games against Man City and Liverpool respectively, so similar numbers may be expected here today. Backing Newcastle’s GK to make four or more saves at 1.62 looks like a smart play.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United shots and shots on target stats

Havertz offers value as a number 9

Kai Havertz has been a utility man for Mikel Arteta this season, playing everywhere from upfront, like he is expected to here, to left back. The German’s shooting numbers may seem unimpressive, but this is partly down to his use in various positions. The last two games in which he played solely as a number 9, Havertz has had four shots on target and nine shots total. With the Gunners likely to dominate and Newcastle’s defence giving up chances, backing Havertz for a shot on target at 1.73 looks to be great value.

2 22 2024 ARSENAL betbuilder stats pack SHOOTING

Harvey Barnes an option here

Barnes has made just three appearances since returning from a five-month injury lay-off, but he looks to be right up to speed already. The winger bagged a goal against Luton in his first game back and has had two or more shots twice, despite only starting one of these three games. With Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard less inclined to track back down the right flank than those on Arsenal’s left, it’s likely Newcastle’s best chances will come down Barnes’ side, and him getting two shots off again wouldn’t be a huge surprise. He can be backed to take two or more shots at 1.73.

Arsenal vs Newcastle Goals and Assists Stats

Nobody can match Saka’s consistency

Though not adding to his tally in the Champions League in midweek, Bukayo Saka has been Arsenal’s best player this season, and his last six league games have shown why. The Arsenal man has scored or assisted in each game, racking up eight goal contributions in total. Against a Newcastle defence that has been especially leaky recently, Saka will surely have chances here. Seven of these goal contributions were goals, so you may choose to back him to score anytime at 2.63, however, those looking to play it safer can back him to score or assist at 1.80 instead.

2 22 2024 ARSENAL betbuilder stats pack GOALSCORING

Longstaff a solid longshot pick

With both strikers out injured, Sean Longstaff is second only to Anthony Gordon for Premier League goals (4) amongst players expected to start this one. The North Shields-born midfielder is Newcastle’s main goal threat from deep, crashing the box and looking to get on the end of cutbacks and loose balls. With Newcastle’s best chances likely to come on the counter, a trailing Longstaff may find space to run into here, so backing him to score anytime at 9/1 looks the best value of any Newcastle option, especially with Longstaff notching three goals in his last five starts.

Arsenal Cards and Fouls Stats

Havertz comfortably tops the Arsenal fouls list

Topping the fouls committed chart for Arsenal is Kai Havertz, racking up 1.60 fouls per 90 in the league this season. Expected to play upfront here, Havertz has started eight games for Arsenal in which he has played at least part of the game as a striker, committing a foul in each one. He has committed two or more fouls in six of these games, and in the two games in which he has played solely as a striker, he has committed three fouls in both. Havertz can be backed to commit two fouls at 1.53, very good value considering his record in this position.

2 22 2024 ARSENAL betbuilder stats pack CARDS FOR

Perhaps Newcastle’s best player, Bruno Guimaraes excels in tight spaces, aiming to relieve pressure on his side by beating his man or winning a foul for his side. He draws 3.09 fouls per 90, amongst the highest in the Premier League, and he is currently on a run of nine straight Premier League games winning three or more fouls. He won three fouls the last time these sides met and can be backed to win two fouls at 1.40, something which should be in any Arsenal vs Newcastle bet builder.

Newcastle Cards and Fouls Stats

Tough assignment for Dan Burn

Newcastle’s Dan Burn has occasionally featured at centre back for Eddie Howe this season, but he will be back out on the left here, tasked with stopping one of the league’s most in-form players in Bukayo Saka. Saka draws 2.11 fouls per 90, much more than any other Arsenal player, whilst Burn commits 1.04 fouls per 90. The 31-year-old has committed a foul in five of his last seven Newcastle games, committing three fouls in a similarly tough game against Man City last month. Available at 1.30 to commit a foul here, Burn offers great value in the fouls markets.

2 22 2024 NEWCASTLE UNITED betbuilder stats pack CARDS FOR 1

Gabriel Martinelli ranks fairly low on the fouls won list considering his tendency to take on his man; his 1.17 fouls per 90 won leaves him sitting fourth behind Saka, Havertz and Jorginho. However, across his last four games the average is sitting at 2.0 fouls won per game. He has won at least one foul in his last four games, whilst his matchup, Kieran Trippier, commits 1.11 fouls per 90, and has committed at least one foul in three of his last four Premier League games. Martinelli can be backed to win a foul at 1.30.
