Bournemouth Vs West Brom Match Preview
The EFL Championship season kicks off this Friday when recently relegated West Brom travel to the Vitality Stadium to play Bournemouth, who made it to the first round of the playoffs last season where they were beaten by eventual winners Brentford.
It’s been a long summer for Bournemouth fans to reflect on the agony of losing in the playoffs and they’ll be hoping that new manager Scott Parker, replacing Jonathan Woodgate at the end of last season, will be able to return the side to the Premier League, a division that fans had the luxury of enjoying for five seasons before being relegated in 2020.
Bournemouth have become accustomed to punching above their weight in recent years and Scott Parker will be well aware that he is expected to have a fair go at promotion, with anything less than a top-six finish likely to be seen as a failure.
Bournemouth have certainly been testing themselves in pre-season, with matches against La Liga side Granada and European Champions Chelsea – impressively only losing each match by a single goal against two sides considered far superior to the Cherries. Parker has already secured his first competitive win, with an emphatic 5-0 EFL cup win against MK Dons.
This transfer window has been a mixed bag with the Cherries only bringing in two players – Emiliano Marcondes on a free from Brentford and left-back Leif Davis who returns for another season on loan from Leeds. They were unable to retain fan-favourite goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and Spanish left-back Diego Rico, while Jack Wilshere and Nnamdi Ofoborh both left the club on free transfers, and rumours continue to link all-action midfielder, Philip Billing, with a move to recently promoted Norwich. However, it looks like star striker Dominik Solanke will remain at the club for another season which is a massive boost for the club after he bagged 15 goals in 40 games last season.
West Brom could only manage one season in the Premier League after their promotion from the EFL Championship in 2019/20, with the arrival of ‘relegation expert’ Sam Allardyce not being enough to keep the club in the league as they ultimately finished 13 points from safety.
Former Bayern Munich defender Valerian Ismael is the new man in charge of the Baggies and he will be tasked with returning them to the promised lands of the Premier League. His side has given a solid account of themselves in pre-season, winning 3 out of their 4 games and also managing a clean sheet in each fixture.
As is expected after relegation, a number of players have been moved on from the club, including the experienced trio of Charlie Austin, Kieran Gibbs, and Branislav Ivanovic. The chequebook has stayed closed at The Hawthorns so far this summer with the club only doing busy in the free market so far – bringing in winger Adam Reach, midfielder Alex Mowatt and defender Matt Clarke. The club may be focussing on keeping their star players rather than new signings, with creative attacker Matheus Pereira publicly stating he wished to leave the club.
This one promises to be an exciting opener to the EFL championship season as Bournemouth, who have one of the youngest squads in the league with an average age of 24, face one of the most experienced sides in the division, the baggies in comparison have an average age of 27, with both sides having promotion ambitions they’ll be looking to get off to a winning start.
Bournemouth Vs West Brom Predicted Line ups
Bournemouth have no new injury concerns and I expect them to line up similarly to how they have in the pre-season and against MK Dons. Long-serving defender Steve Cook remains injured so it’s likely Zeno Ibsen-Rossi and Lloyd Kelly will continue their partnership at the heart of defence, while Junior Stanislas could return to the side after only making the bench against MK Dons.
West Brom, despite having a high turnover this summer still have a strong squad to choose from in their league opener with many of last season’s core remaining at the club, including goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
Bournemouth predicted line up:
Travers; Stacey, Rossi, Kelly, Smith; Marcondes, Kilkenny, Billing; Brooks, Solanke, Stanislas
West Brom predicted line up:
Johnstone; O’Shea, Bartley, Clarke; Furlong, Livermore, Mowatt, Townsend; Robinson, Grant, Diangana

Bournemouth Vs West Brom Betting Tips and Predictions
These are without a doubt two of the top sides in this division for this upcoming season and I think it’s hard to call an outright winner from this one with both possessing strong sides. It could be a cagey start to the season with neither side looking to risk giving up much in their season opener. Solanke and Grant both represent capable goal scorers at this level and with the attacking talent on display I’d say backing both teams to score at 1.8 is good value.
Match Prediction: Bournemouth 1 – 1 West Brom
