Bristol City vs Sheffield United Preview and Betting Tips
The play-offs are here, and our Bristol City vs Sheffield United bet Builder tips are designed to take advantage of what is a fascinating situation. There’s historically been a notion that it’s better to be one of the form teams who make it into the play off spots late on rather than one of those sides twiddling their thumbs for the last dozen matches or so with their place already secured.
I don’t think it’s quite as relevant here given Sheffield United were embroiled in a top 2 battle until as late as gameweek 42 but it still carries some weight given Chris Wilder will be desperately trying to galvanise his Blades whilst Liam Manning can almost let the occasion do the talking in his dressing room.
There’s a feeling of achievement already at Ashton Gate, the scenes on final day depicting a fan base already amazed by the feat of being in with a shot of a promotion campaign. Manning will have to make sure that feeling doesn’t hold his side back and that they truly believe they are there on merit.
Sheffield United have never achieved promotion through this method yet are by some distance the best of the bunch this time around. Can they lay their play off demons to rest?

This one follows the form book and it’s difficult when you consider the gulf in point tally and as such the inferred quality of the sides to rule out Sheffield United testing Max O’Leary.
The Robins keeper is a sturdy man to have between the sticks and ranks fairly well amongst Championship keepers. Despite playing for the 6th best side however, he’s not short of action with City facing 3.74 SOT against per 90.
Lately that number has shot up with opponents having 4 or more SOT in 5 of City’s last 6 and Sheffield United, blessed with attacking talent, will be confident they can follow suit.
They’ve had just 2 clean sheets in their last 21 matches and I can see them having to survive an onslaught at some stage.
I can see a transitional game here with neither side looking to dwell on the ball in defensive areas- both ranking in the bottom 5 for high recoveries against.
Bristol City will however look to step onto Sheffield United in moments however- 4.91 high recoveries- and Souza being the main ball distributor in deep possession could lead to him being fouled.
He’s been a weapon in build up and over longer distances this season and I can see him being fouled at some point in this one. He’s drawn 1.1 fouls per 90 this season and I can see him doing so again.
Cannon has certainly had a far from ideal start to life in the Steel City but if there’s ever an opportunity to make a hero of yourself the playoffs is that.
He’s been entrusted by Chris Wilder over the last few weeks to start and whilst there are a plethora of options for the Blades, Cannon’s running power and frame could make him the ideal front man with either a 3 man supporting cast behind him or a partner in the likes of Moore or Campbell.
He’s averaged 1.0 SOT per 90 across the season and with Bristol City’s somewhat frail defensive record there should be opportunities for the Irishman to sniff out an opening.
He showed great goalscoring form earlier in the campaign and if he can find anything close he’ll be a real danger.
This may be a little recency biased but McCrorie has carved a role out for himself as a right footed left-wing-back at Ashton Gate and fresh off the back of his late goalscoring exploits, he seems a good option to test Cooper.
Sheffield United have been conceding multiple shots on target per game over the last few weeks and I can see City looking to aim for McCrorie on the end of crosses. They’ll likely look to target the Blades’ left hand side during their general play with Hirakawa up against Burrows but this could make McCrorie a danger at the back post.
He’s registered a SOT in each of his last 4 home matches with 5 shots taken in each of his previous 2 games. The Blades have struggled to find a consistent performer at right back and Bristol City could capitalise.
