Burnley VS Manchester City PREDICTED LINEUPS

New signing Sander Berge likely to start from the bench

The Clarets have spent around £75m on new players but their most recent signing Sander Berge is unlikely to go straight into the XI. Michael Obafemi will definitely miss out after undergoing hamstring surgery.

There is no set eleven for Vincent Kompany and there is plenty of competition in all areas of the squad. Arijanet Muric should start in goal, but James Trafford could play against his former club. The striker spot is anyone’s guess and Lyle Foster may well get the nod upfront. There are several possible alternatives though including veteran Jay Rodriguez.

Mahrez departure frees up Foden for more starts this season

Nathan Ake is the only main injury doubt for the visitors. Kevin De Bruyne is another who is lacking match fitness so will probably only start from the bench. Pep Guardiola is capable of anything tactically, but a 3-2-4-1 system looks the most likely for the Citizens here.

Joao Cancelo and Josko Gvardiol could be options for City at the back but the trio of Akanj-Dias and Walker are very trustable and Pep should lean on them in this first fixture. With Mahrez now departed then it should open the door to Phil Foden for more regular playing time. Alvarez and Haaland may well be used in the same XI with the Argentine playing a deeper role.

Burnley vs Man City team stats

Can Kompany style transition into the Premier League?

The hire of Vincent Kompany as new Burnley manager last season was a complete masterstroke and Burnley’s general philosophy and tactics changed overnight when he arrived at the club. The Clarets averaged a massive 68% possession, but it will be much more difficult for them at the Premier League level to dominate the ball.

Burnley were the highest scorers in the Championship and averaged 1.80 xG per 90 mins so were legitimately strong. They also had the best xGA (50.14) although overachieved that metric by only conceding 35 times. If that figure reverts to the average/mean, then it will be a challenging test.

City dominance with all metrics likely to continue

Pep Guardiola’s men topped pretty much all significant statistical categories last season. They won the Premier League with 89 points which was only six more than their expected points figure of 83.04. The Citizens had the best xG and xGA figures of any team, mostly by a large margin.

City scored 94 times and only Arsenal (88) could get remotely close to that mark. Conceding just 33 goals, this is by far the best defence in the Premier League and was no fluke due to their xGA of 34.21. Guardiola has developed a beast of a team which nearly always outplays the opposition statistically – something to look out for in your Burnley vs Manchester City Bet Builder.

Burnley vs Man City players to watch

Beyer-ing for blood vs the City attackers

Jordan Beyer had a strong season on loan at Burnley in the Championship and they have now purchased him for £15m from Borussia Monchengladbach. He will have the unenviable task of dealing with the likes of Erling Haaland and Julien Alvarez. It’s going to be a very tough first Premier League assignment for the German.

He only produced 15 fouls in 29 starts last season which is probably why he’s as big as 1.67 to commit one or more fouls here. Beyer could merit serious consideration to add to your Burnley vs Man City Bet Builder, simply based on the extremely difficult matchup where he might get exposed and desperate.

New Swiss signing should have his shooting boots on

Burnley has splashed out nearly £20m on Basel attacker Zeki Amdouni. This could prove to be a masterstroke or a flop considering he’s never played above the Swiss Super League level before. However, he bagged 12 league goals last season and also caught the eye in the UEFA Conference League by netting seven times in 11 games.

Burnley might get limited opportunities so will need to rely on individual moments of class. Amdouni looks big at 2.0 to have one or more SOT and odds of 1.53 for him just to have two or more shots also look appealing. He could force the issue too much on his home debut and is a definite option to add to your Burnley vs Man City Bet Builder.

Foul magnet Grealish to cause Roberts problems

It’s a well-known fact that Jack Grealish is one of the most fouled men in the Premier League. His trickery, arrogance and wind-up ability just makes defenders want to get stuck with mistimed tackles. The first right back to come up against him this season will be Connor Roberts who should be in for an extremely tough evening.

It’s a surprise to see him as big as 1.33 just to commit one or more fouls considering the matchup he has. Roberts only produced 26 fouls in 38 games last season, but the Championship level is a completely different beast compared to Man City. It would be a shock for him to have a clean match vs the defending Premier League Champions.

Nordic meat shield Haaland to raise his game on the opening night

For the second year in a row, Erling Braut Haaland attracted some criticism for a poor performance in the Community Shield. Last year, he immediately came out of the blocks strong in the Premier League by bagging a brace vs West Ham and he may well have a point to prove here.

Haaland is at his best when he’s fired up and nobody in this Burnley side can contain him if he’s on form. The Norwegian is 1.60 to score anytime here which looks big when you consider he scored 35 times in the league last season. Haaland to have two or more shots on target at 1.44 could also be considered in your Burnley vs Man City Bet Builder.

Foden value to contribute offensively

Phil Foden was frustrated at times last season and actually only started 18 Premier League games. His total minutes on the field were just 1694 but those numbers should increase significantly with the departure of Riad Mahrez. He still managed to score 10 goals and supply five assists in the league.

Foden, who is a generational talent from the City Academy is priced at 1.91 to score or assist which looks generous. He should be in the mood to impress and could pop up anywhere in attack, most predominantly on the right cutting inside.

Rodri central to Man City pass-hungry system

Man City are known for dominating possession and should have a strong lion’s share of the ball here. Rodri is often central to their passing systems and averaged 96 passes per 90 mins in the Premier League last season.

He can be backed at 1.50 to have 90 or more passes which should be a relatively safe addition to your Burnley vs Man City Bet Builder as long as he isn’t subbed off early for Kalvin Phillips. That is always the risk with any Man City player but whilst the game is still alive then Pep Guardiola is unlikely to risk taking off his key midfielder.

Burnley vs Man City matchups to watch

Josh Brownhill vs Bernardo Silva

There be will a lot of attention on the matchups in wide areas, but someone is going to have to keep a lid on the City playmakers like Bernardo Silva, Julian Alvarez and possibly Kevin de Bruyne. Josh Brownhill is Burnley’s midfield enforcer and the shortest price of any player to commit one or more fouls in this opening night fixture (1.13).

A more backable option is to take him for two or more fouls at 1.67 and the stats certainly back up such a suggestion. Brownhill averaged one foul every 58 minutes in the Championship last season and at Premier League level that should further increase.

Kyle Walker vs Anass Zaroury

This is an intriguing matchup on both sides. Kyle Walker is one of the fastest fullbacks in world football and is likely to duel Zaroury several times in this game. The Burnley wide man was only fouled 19 times in 26 starts last year but can be a tricky customer and there is a chance that Walker might get caught out of position at some stage.

It is noticeable that Zaroury is one of the biggest-priced players in this match to produce one or more fouls (1.83). This is surprising because Burnley is likely to come under pressure leading to some desperate moments. For those who are brave, then adding him to your Burnley vs Man City Bet Builder could represent decent value.

Connor Roberts vs Jack Grealish

Roberts is already listed as a player to watch but this is also a matchup which significantly stands out. Grealish was fouled 27 times in 23 starts for City last season and is a magnet to win free kicks. Connor Roberts at 1.36 to produce one foul or more looks like a great price.

Grealish himself is no saint and produced 27 fouls of his own vs the opposition. He often gives away a cheap free kick and if Burnley gets physical on him, then the England international could get frustrated. Grealish to commit one or more fouls at 1.33 looks fairly safe considering his past record and nature.

Man City fixtures averaged 3.30 goals per game last season and 25 of their 38 matches ended with over 2.5 goals.

Burnley was the highest-scoring team in the Championship but overachieved their xGA by 15 goals.

Man City beat them 6-0 in the FA Cup last season and the step up to the Premier League level will be difficult.

Football icon Erling Haaland to score anytime

Last year’s Premier League top scorer with 35 goals should be able to net vs a newly promoted team and might be fired up after taking some criticism in the Community Shield last week.

Football icon Connor Roberts to commit 1+ foul

Facing Jack Grealish who was fouled once every 80 minutes last season. Roberts only averaged 0.75 fouls per 90 mins in the Championship, but this is a big step up and a nightmare matchup.

Football icon Jack Grealish to commit 1+ foul

Both Grealish and Roberts could be at each other’s throats here and look to get stuck in.

Grealish produced 27 fouls in 21 league starts last season and can let his head go from time to time, giving away needless cheap free kicks.
