No Foster for Burnley
Lyle Foster has led the line in Burnley’s first four matches but will be forced to sit out of this one thanks to his red card on Monday – it turns out you can’t just elbow people and get away with it. Michael Obafemi is also out so the decision is whether Jay Rodriguez gets a rare start or Zeki Amdouni starts up top with a whole host of attacking options pushing for a start behind him. Elsewhere, stalwarts of last season Charlie Taylor and Josh Brownhill could retain their place in the XI.
Injury-hit United struggling to field an XI
Erik ten Hag has bemoaned injuries this week, stating he has not been able to play his strongest XI. The list is growing longer with Sofyan Amrabat, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tyrell Malacia, Amad Diallo, Antony and Jadon Sancho all unavailable. Raphael Varane and Mason Mount were at least seen in team training and they could feature. Youngster Rasmus Hojlund should lead the line again – he scored against Bayern Munich in midweek.

Burnley struggling to find form
It has not been a good start to the season for Burnley. They have the worst xG in the league, taking the third-fewest shots and second-fewest on target. They have conceded an average of 17 shots per game and conceded the second most on target – over seven per 90. Their frustration and disorganisation is showing in their discipline – they have picked up two cards per game since opening day and committed an average of 12 fouls. Both sides have won four or more corners in all four Burnley matches.
United need to start firing
United’s process hasn’t been terrible going forward but they aren’t ruthless enough – they have scored six goals from nine xG created so far and are in the bottom six for their goals-to-shots-on-target ratio. They have been awful defensively, giving up over 15 shots per game and almost six shots on target – something that has to change if they want to realise their ambitions. Kompany’s men not afraid to shoot
Josh Brownhill has already had four shots despite playing 1.5 90s while Zeki Amdouni, who could lead the line, is averaging almost 2.5 shots per 90 and over a shot on target – one to watch out for against a United side that aren’t defend well at the moment. Winger Luca Koleosho is getting in on the act too – he is averaging 1.67 shots per 90.
Rashford the obvious shots man
Man United don’t tend to do much if Marcus Rashford isn’t on his game. He has been wayward but is at least taking a pop at goal – he is averaging just shy of five shots per 90 minutes played and it’s unsurprising that at least one of those is finding the target every week. Elsewhere, Casemiro could be an interesting addition to your bet builder – he scored twice in Germany and is averaging just shy of two shots per 90 minutes played – not bad for a defensive midfielder.

Time for somebody else to step up for Burnley
Burnley have scored four goals in the Premier League this season – Lyle Foster has scored two and assisted one of those. It’s time for somebody else to step up and perform. Josh Brownhill is comfortable doing just that – he managed 15 goal contributions during their promotion campaign and scored in the final moments against Tottenham. Zeki Amdouni was the goalscorer against Nottingham Forest and will hope to add to that.
Fernandes matching Rashford
Rashford remains the biggest goal threat for Man United and though he only has as many goals and assists as Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen, his 2.1 xG remains impressive and shows that he should score more soon enough. However, Fernandes has also posted 2.1 xG for the season, skewed somewhat by a penalty that he scored.

Burnley tough in the middle
Burnley’s approach appears to be about denying the opposition time and space in the centre of the park based on those committing fouls. Josh Cullen has already received two yellow cards this term and has committed 1.75 fouls per 90 while forward Zeki Amdouni is at 1.38 – he will want to make his presence felt in attack against United.
Trio to be targeted
They will be up against the trio of Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, none of which have felt the wrath of opponents this season but are used to doing so. United’s captain has been fouled more than once per 90 in each of his three and a half seasons, powerful Scotsman McTominay is at a minimum of 1.2 per season and Casemiro was at 1.02 for the 22-23 campaign.

For all his undoubted quality, Fernandes has always been both a workhorse and petulant. He has been booked on three occasions and is committing 1.4 fouls per 90 minutes. Elsewhere, Diogo Dalot has had a tough start to the year, unhelped by a lack of support from those around and him.
Cullen and Amdouni to be invovled
Josh Cullen is Burnley’s most fouled player, perhaps unsurprising given his key role in setting the tone for their play as the deeper midfielder – Bruno Fernandes will be tasked with stopping him from getting a foothold in the game. Like Cullen, Amdouni is a player who dishes out only what he receives – the Swiss youngster has been fouled more than twice per 90.
