Norwich vs Wrexham
Two teams that haven’t been short on entertainment this season, both Norwich and Wrexham games have seen over 2.6 goals on average.
Norwich have been able to call upon the attacking talents of Josh Sargent who’s netted goals in 4 of the first 5 Championship games. Mathias Kvistgaarden got off the mark against Coventry which will be even more attacking encouragement for Liam Manning’s side.
Wrexham have alike been potent in front of goal, with front-man Kieffer Moore bagging 4 goals in his last 3 league matches. They’ve been equally leaky at the other end, conceding 10 goals already and allowing the most shots against in the division.
Norwich haven’t quite got a firm grip defensively either, and both of these sides sit 24th and 23rd respectively for xG against which points to a goal-filled contest. Over 2.5 covers an end-to-end thriller and a one-way thrashing.
Derby vs Preston
Preston North End have had a remarkable start, considering they were dealt a pretty difficult hand by the fixture list. The Lilywhites have come away with 8 points from their first 5 matches, despite facing newly-relegated teams Leicester and Preston as well as league leaders Middlesbrough.
They’ve done so in fairly low-margin fashion so far but heading to the East Midlands to face Derby County they’ll be confident they can translate that strong Deepdale form onto the road. They generated more shots inside the box than either of their opponents in both of their previous away outings.
Derby have struggled to keep goals out which is surprising given what we’ve come to know of John Eustace sides previously. They’ve conceded 11 goals in 5 matches and the data backs it up – allowing the 5th most shots against and conceding the 4th most xG.
Preston forward Milutan Osmajic is expected to return to the side for the match, and he’s generated the most xG per 90 of any player in the division, so should bring some needed firepower.
Blackburn vs Ipswicg
Ipswich Town responded in some style to any early-season critics with their crushing 5-0 victory over Sheffield United last weekend. Perhaps they remain so enticingly priced this weekend as many await to see if that result was simply a flash in the pan.
I’m confident Ipswich have turned a corner over the break, with McKenna able to truly work with what he’s got now the transfer window is shut. Ipswich were one of the more active sides, which couldn’t have helped the unity and cohesion within the squad for the first string of games.
The underlying numbers depict Ipswich as what we generally thought they were pre-season; a really well-coached, effective outfit. The Tractor Boys are dominating games, having possession in the right areas, and generating plenty of chances whilst also limiting their opponents.
Blackburn Rovers have proved fairly middling thus far in the campaign, and Ipswich seem like they’ll have too much quality for Valerien Ismael’s side.
Hull vs Southampton
In a similar vein to Ipswich, Southampton feel like a team who are on the verge of discovering just how good they can be. They are still waiting for their first victory since opening day, but a derby day draw with Portsmouth isn’t the end of the world.
The Saints have been dominant in every attacking metric except the key one; goals. 1st for possession, 2nd for xG and open play xG, 3rd for shots but, crucially, 12th for goals.
They again are still trying to stumble on the right combination but there were plenty of positives against their bitter rivals, given the formation change.
Hull City have proved one of the most chaotic sides so far this season with 18 goals across their 5 matches but that sort of contest could suit Will Still’s side with the quality at his disposal in forward areas. Late goals have perhaps covered over the Orange cracks from a Tigers’ perspective and the Saints could expose them.
