Group F looks to be one of the more straightforward affairs at this summer’s Club World Cup. German giants and 2024 Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund will take on Brazilian side Fluminense, as well as South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea.
It’s a group that lacks a bit of star power. Dortmund are the clear favourites with the bookies, but who looks set to join them in the knockouts?

Club World Cup Group f Preview
dORTMUND
Dortmund are the clear favourites in Group F, priced at just 1.44 to come out on top.
They finished the domestic season in scintillating form, winning their last five Bundesliga games on the spin and also beating Barcelona 3-1 in the Champions League, albeit not enough to overturn the first leg deficit.
Dortmund are embroiled in some transfer talk. Jobe Bellingham has joined the Black Yellow from Sunderland, and reports also suggest they’ve rejected several bids from Chelsea for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.
This could see Gittens’ mind wander, and perhaps he doesn’t feature as heavily if the Chelsea probing continues, but regardless; Dortmund have way too much firepower for anyone in this group, if they apply themselves.
They’ve travelled with little to no injury issues, only the long term absentee Nico Schlotterbeck should be missing.
I’d struggle to back against them to play up to their price and win the group.
Fluminese
At 3.1 to win the group, Fluminese are the closest competitor to Dortmund in the bookies eyes.
They also have them at just 1.20 to qualify, with a substantial gap back to the other two sides.
One advantage that the Brazillian side have is their fitness. They’re just 11 games in to their season, so come here in prime condition. Whilst the larger European sides are perhaps flagging from a long campaign.
Fluminese sit fifth in the Brazillian Serie A at the time of writing this, they’re also unbeaten in six in all comps, winning five of those.
They are a hugely experienced side, with the likes of Thiago Silva and Renato Augusto in their ranks.
An issue they do face is injuries. A number of first team players are sidelined, including top scorer German Cano, veteran forward Keno and midfielder Agustin Canobbio. Those three account for 12 of the 15 league goals that Fluminese have scored this season; however their recent good run of form has shown they can cope without them.
Mamelodi Sundowns
South African side Mamelodi look like a really interesting prospect in this group, and I wouldn;t be surprised to see them cause a couple of issues, despite being the outsiders to qualify from the group at odds of 6.0.
Domestically, they are flying. In terms of coming into the tournament, it’s hard to see a team who are better poised.
They have raced clear at the summit of the South African top flight. They’ve won 24 of their 28 league games, they’re 13 points clear and have rattled in 63 goals and conceded just 13. Regardless of the level, those are some seriously impressive numbers.
Although largely built out with domestic players, Mamelodi’s generous budget has allowed them to attract some overseas talent.
Brazilian’s Lucas Ribeiro (16G, 9A) and Arthur Sales (8G, 8A) both arrived from Belgian sides, with Mamelodi looking to utilise some different avenues to bring in quality, and it’s been a resounding success.
Mamelodi have enough ability in attack to hurt the other sides. But the step up in opposition will stretch their stern defence, I’d be eyeing up backing goals in their games especially with the expressive nature which South African sides play with.
Ulsan HD
Rounding out the sides in Group F are the Korean outfit.
Ulsan are third in the K-League, but floundering in pursuit of top side Jeonbuk and come into this after a deflating 3-1 defeat to the aforementioned league leaders.
They’re priced at 4.33 to get out of the group, and I’d be steering well clear. I think they’ll likely come bottom.
They’re coming into this with some faltering domestic form, and I struggle to see how they aren’t wounded from that and also thinking ahead to their return to action. Whereas Mamelodi are buoyant, and this feels like a chance for a showcase for their talent; it’s a very interesting predicament.
I’d be wary of any goal bets on the Korean side, unless you’re fancying them to be swept aside by Dortmund. Only one side has had fewer games go over 2.5 goals in the K-League this season, with only six of their 19 outings paying out on the overs.

I think there’s a decent bit of value here. Dortmund should win this group at a relative canter, and their 1.20 price to do so reflects that.
They’re by far and away the strongest side. Fluminese may have caused them some issues but their injuries leave them with less cutting edge than they require to really cause an upset. Even with rotation, Dortmund should sweep aside Ulsan and Mamelodi; although I expect a goal fest with the South Africans.
Should they win the group, which this bet is based on, they’ll meet the runners up of Group E.
Group E consists of Inter, River Plate, Monterrey and Urawa.
Inter are priced at just 1.36 to win the group, with River priced at 3.60 but then you’ve got a huge jump to 19.0 for Urawa and 23.0 for Monterrey.
So realistically, it’ll be River Plate they play; not a bad side by any means, but Dortmund should be comfortable victors, which would then put them into the quarter finals.
Provided Inter win the group, this bet looks solid. As Dortmund should breeze past any opponents other than the Italians.
Effectively you’re relying on a 1.20 and 1.36 favourite to do their parts and we should be in business.
