Man City and Juventus will both expect comfortable qualification here, but it’s worth remembering that both have had seasons to forget. They’re joined in Group G by 2022 CAF Champions League winners Wydad Casablanca, and 2024 AFC Champions League winners Al-Ain, who will both relish the opportunity to take on some of the biggest teams in the world.
The bookies favour the European sides for obvious reason, but are other teams well placed to capitalise on any slip ups?

Club World Cup Group G Preview
Man City
It has been a difficult season for Pep Guardiola’s Man City, although it must be said that they did manage to somewhat steady the ship when it really mattered, securing qualification for next season’s Champions League with a third-place finish.
The side is likely to look much different ahead of the first game at this tournament, with Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, and Tijjani Reijnders all likely to feature. Cherki showed what he is all about in his France debut against Spain in the Nations League (a goal and an assist in just 27 minutes of action) and could be one to watch if he is signed in time to feature here.
Elsewhere, January signing Omar Marmoush has proven invaluable, adding another dimension to City’s attack and scoring eight goals, including the Premier League’s goal of the season against Bournemouth last month.
Wydad Casablanca
Wydad Casablanca qualified for this competition by winning the CAF Champions League back in 2021/22, but their current side is nowhere near that level. They have now missed out on qualification for Africa’s premier club competition two seasons in a row, finishing 6th and 3rd (only the top two in Morocco’s top flight qualify), and last won their domestic league back in 2022.
Wydad have played two friendlies in preparation for this tournament, losing 1-0 to second-string FC Porto and Sevilla sides at the end of May, so a result against either of the group’s big boys looks unlikely.
If they are to spring a shock, expect centre-forward Cassius Mailula, on loan from Toronto FC, to be involved. The 23-year-old has five goals and seven assists in 27 games in the Moroccan top flight, making him the club’s second top scorer and top assister.
Al-Ain
Like Wydad, Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates qualified for this competition by winning their major continental competition, the AFC Champions League. Their win came in 2023/24, where the club finished a distant third domestically, but secured impressive wins over Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr and Saudi Pro League champions Al Hilal on their way to lifting the Champions League trophy.
However, last season proved to be one to forget, as Al-Ain finished dead last of their 12-team Champions League group, with just two points from eight games, as well as finishing fifth in their domestic top flight, 19 points behind champions Shabab Al-Ahli Dubai.
They do have some real firepower up top, with veteran striker Kodjo Laba leading the line. Laba was the UAE Pro League’s top scorer last season with 20 goals, and the Togo international has now scored 136 goals in 170 appearances for the club since his arrival in 2019.
Juventus
The inclusion of a second European side makes this group more interesting than most. Both teams may have endured challenging campaigns in the 2024/25 season, although they should still progress to the Round of 16 comfortably.
Thiago Motta’s first season in charge never really got off the ground, and he was sacked in March, with Igor Tudor ultimately able to secure Champions League football for next season but still finishing 12 points off title winners Napoli in 4th.
Juventus will also be hoping they can retain Randal Kolo Muani, who scored a respectable eight goals in 19 games following his January loan switch from PSG. With Dusan Vlahovic looking like he is nearing a transfer away, they will need to make quick progress on a deal for Kolo Muani, or they could enter this tournament without a true number 9 in the squad.

There is every chance that the Juventus game in the group stages will be the most difficult game that Man City face in a run to the semi-finals of this tournament. The bookies have them as heavy favourites to win the group, at odds of 1.36, and it is hard to disagree, especially with the new signings expected to slot straight into the starting XI.
That would set them up to face the runners-up of Group H in the Round of 16. That is likely to be Al Hilal or RB Salzburg, with Real Madrid likely to win that group. Not easy games, but City will again be heavily favoured to win against either side.
A win there would send them to a likely quarter-final matchup against Inter Milan, who will likely face Brazil’s Fluminense in the Round of 16. Inter Milan are managerless and have just suffered the worst-ever loss in a Champions League final, so you do have to question how motivated they will be for what is likely to be their first difficult game of the tournament.
