Real Madrid
As Carlo Ancelotti departs Real Madrid to lead Brazil and Xabi Alonso returns to take the reins at his former club, the Club World Cup offers an early opportunity for the German to implement his dynamic 3-4-3 system.
Despite being in a transitional phase, Madrid’s squad undeniably remains the most formidable in the group. In his first season in Spain, Kylian Mbappe netted 31 goals in 34 league starts, earning him the Pichichi trophy. The Frenchman averaged a goal every 94 minutes in the league, to highlight his excellent form, while Los Blancos will also be bolstered by new additions Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen who will join their new club early.
AL-Hilal
Al-Hilal arrive to the tournament as the dominant force in Saudi football, boasting a 67% win rate in the 2024/25 league season. Aleksandar Mitrovic, who had 19 goals from 21 league starts this season, is expected to lead the line, while Segej Milinkovic-Savic and Ruben Neves pull strings in midfield. With 15 goals and 15 assists from 32 league starts, Salem Al-Dawsari was another standout performer on the wing.
Simone Inzaghi, who won 1 league title, 2 Coppa Italia trophies and appeared in the Champions League final twice with Inter Milan since taking over in 2021, has been appointed as the new manager and will look to lead Al Hilal to success in the competition.
RB Salzburg
RB Salzburg enter the tournament with mixed recent form – the Austrian side finished third in the league, while also enduring a difficult Champions League campaign. Salzburg incurred heavy losses to Madrid, PSG, and Atletico, finishing the competition with a -21 goal difference.
However, it is worth noting that the average age of teams selected by Thomas Letsch was just 22.0 years old. Salzburg are a side with a reputation for creating talented youngsters, with names like Erling Haaland, Sadio Mane, Dominik Szoboszlai and Benjamin Sesko all coming through the ranks. Nene Dorgeles, who registered 13 goals and 4 assists in the league is one to keep tabs on, as is Oscar Gloukh on the opposite wing.
Pachuca
Representing Mexico’s Liga MX, Pachuca qualified to the Club World Cup as 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup winners, having beaten Columbus Crew 3-0 in the final. Despite finishing 8th domestically in 2024/25 and showing patchy form, Pachuca will look to cause an upset.
Top scorer Salomon Rondon is the most recognisable name in the side, with the former Everton man accumulating 26 goals in all competitions this season. He was the CONCACAF Champions League top scorer last season with nine goals – two of which came in the final.
Pachuca’s recent continental triumph shows they can compete at a high level, but their inconsistent league campaign makes them more likely to be scrapping for qualification than dictating the group.
