The League Two season draws to a close with the showpiece play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

This will be Crawley Town’s first-ever appearance at the ground and provides them an opportunity to return to League One for the first time since 2014/15. They have been in superb form of late, and absolutely demolished heavily-fancied MK Dons 8-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals, so they should be full of confidence here.

Crewe meanwhile dug out a hugely gritty performance to overcome a 2-0 deficit away to Doncaster and ultimately won on penalties to book their spot at Wembley. The Alex were last in the third tier in 2021/22, and despite stumbling over the line into the play-offs, having won just one of their last nine, they now stand just one game away from an almost immediate return.

Play-off finals are always a fascinating affair and provide plenty of intrigue when it comes to betting. Crawley vs Crewe Predicted Lineups

Three enforced changes for Scott Lindsey

A dazzling display at MK Dons saw Crawley run out 8-1 winners on aggregate, and though the scoreline may have been flattering (having lost across the two legs on xG), the performance remains very impressive. Unfortunately, it has come at something of a cost, with Klaidi Lolos, Will Wright and Harry Forster expected to miss out here after suffering injuries in that 5-1 second leg win. Jack Roles should come into the front three in place of Lolos, while Kellan Gordon is expected to replace Forster on the right of the midfield four. Joy Mukena meanwhile is expected to replace Will Wright as the right-sided centre-back.

Lee Bell to keep the faith with 4-2-3-1

Prone to tinkering with his starting XI and formation, the nature of Crewe’s turnaround win at Doncaster, and how out of keeping it has been with their recent form should see the manager go for the same starters again here. With the constant changes having been unable to arrest their slide in form towards the end of the season, we expect Bell to hold off on the rotation this time and put out the team that pulled them back from the brink and ultimately got them over the line.

Crewe

Crawley vs Crewe Team Stats

Goals could well flow at Wembley

Crawley have seen over 2.5 goals land in seven of their last nine games, with the Reds having scored twice or more in seven of these nine. They have kept just three clean sheets in their last 14, which should offer some comfort to Crewe, but we do anticipate this line being broken either mostly or solely by Crawley. It would be understandable if Crewe were apprehensive about facing a side in such good goalscoring form, having conceded three or more goals in three of their last five regular season games. Play-off finals are notoriously cagey, but with neither side looking to have the defence to grind out a clean sheet, we expect goals to flow here. Over 2.5 goals can be backed at 1.75.

Crewe offer nice value in corner markets

Crewe have averaged 5.20 corners per game in League Two this season, the ninth-most in the division. They have managed at least five corners in four of their last seven games, despite their generally poor results in this time, losing three and drawing two of these. They can be backed at 1.73 to have five or more corners here, a very achievable tally no matter the gamestate.

Crawley vs Crewe shots and shots on target stats

Hard to look past Danilo Orsi here

Striker for the Reds, Orsi, has had a stellar season, bagging 21 goals in 45 league games before hitting a hat-trick away to MK Dons as Crawley booked their ticket to Wembley in style with a 5-1 victory on the road. The 28-year-old striker has now had a shot on target in 11 of his last 13 games for the club, including in each of the last five. He averaged 0.88 shots on target per 90, third-most of the likely starters here, and still looks good value at 1.33 to have a shot on target here.

18 05 2024 CRAWLEY TOWN betbuilder stats pack SHOOTING

Chris Long the pick of the bunch for the Alex

Crewe have few great options in the shooting markets, but Chris Long looks a good shout here. The forward hit 1.02 shots on target per 90 in the regular League Two season, marginally behind Elliott Nevitt’s 1.07, and comes into this Wembley final having had a shot on target in eight of his last 11 starts for Crewe. Taking more shots per 90 than any other Crewe player, at 2.99, Long looks a very solid option here, where he can be backed at 1.50 to have a shot on target.

18 05 2024 CREWE ALEXANDRA betbuilder stats pack SHOOTING

Crawley vs Crewe goals and assists stats

Liam Kelly looks a great option here

After missing a month of the season and needing a four-game span to ease himself back into the side, Crawley’s Liam Kelly has been fantastic for the Reds. His 13 regular season goal contributions this season is second only to Danilo Orsi for Crawley, an impressive return from midfield and he has been in great form here recently. Kelly has scored two goals and assisted three in his last six games, bagging a goal and an assist in the first leg against MK Dons and notching another assist in the second leg. Kelly has either scored or assisted in four of his last six Crawley games and looks to offer great value here, as he can be backed to make it five in seven at 2.88.

18 05 2024 CRAWLEY TOWN betbuilder stats pack GOALSCORING

Elliott Nevitt looks by far the best choice here

Crewe’s horrific form prior to their 2-0 win and subsequent penalty shoot-out success over Doncaster is well known, and that means few if any of their attacking players can be considered to be in form right now. However, Nevitt has the best claim of any Railwayman to that title. The 28-year-old striker has scored four goals in his last 12 games for Crewe, a record which sounds uninspiring, but actually accounts for four of the seven goals the club have scored during that 12-game stretch, with an own goal against Doncaster meaning besides Nevitt, only Mickey Demetriou and Rio Adebisi have scored for the club in their last 12 fixtures. With seemingly only Nevitt capable of finding the net for the Alex, it makes sense to back him to score anytime here at 3.40.

Crawley CARDS AND FOULS stats

Jack Roles offers nice value for fouls

Crawley forward Jack Roles is the pick of the bunch when it comes to fouls bets for Town. The Cypriot attacking midfielder commits 1.74 fouls per 90 in League Two, the highest total of anyone expected to start for the Reds. He has committed a foul in each of his four starts for the club this season and has committed fouls in each of his last four appearances, three of which came off the bench. Two of these four appearances have seen Roles commit two or more fouls. He is up against Joel Tabiner and Rio Adebisi, who win 1.62 and 1.04 fouls per 90 respectively, the second and third-most of any Crewe players. In such a crucial game, and surrounded by players adept at winning fouls, backing Roles to commit two or more fouls at 1.67 looks a smart play here.

18 05 2024 CRAWLEY TOWN betbuilder stats pack CARDS FOR

No Crewe player has drawn more fouls per 90 in League Two than Welsh centre back Ed Turns, at 1.68. He has won fouls in six of the last seven games in which he played over 45 minutes of football, winning three or more fouls on four occasions. Up against Crawley’s most prolific fouler, Danilo Orsi, who commits 1.62 fouls per 90 in League Two, Turns looks a fantastic option to win at least one foul here, with Orsi having committed a foul in eight of his last 12 starts for the club.

18 05 2024 CREWE ALEXANDRA betbuilder stats pack CARDS DRAWN

Crewe cards and fouls stats

Rio Adebisi has some nice matchups here

Sitting just outside the top five for fouls per 90 in the league amongst likely Crewe starters, at 0.84, Rio Adebisi still looks a strong option to commit a foul here. The left-back has done so in five of his last eight games, and in three of his last four games in which he started as a left-back, including twice against Doncaster last time out. He will be matched up against Gordon and Roles, who win a considerable amount of fouls, Gordon averaging 2.39 fouls won per 90. Adebisi has good fouling pedigree and strong matchups and can be backed to commit a foul at 1.57.

18 05 2024 CREWE ALEXANDRA betbuilder stats pack CARDS FOR

Sitting fourth for fouls won per 90 amongst Crawley players in the league, at 1.01, Liam Kelly has a very solid matchup in Aaron Rowe and Conor Thomas. The pair sit atop the fouls charts for Crewe, committing 1.68 and 1.59 respectively in League Two this season, and both arrive here having committed at least one foul in their last five starts for the club. Kelly meanwhile has won fouls in four of his last six for Crawley, winning two or more on three occasions during this time, and looks highly likely to be fouled at least once at Wembley.
