England vs Denmark

Russo is Wiegman’s preferred option in the middle. After her stunning backheel at last summers Euro’s, she’s never looked back.
Russo will be frustrated not to have opened her account on match day 1, against Haiti, where she had 6 shots and a massive 5 on target.
Russo has now joined Arsenal from Manchester United. Last season, she averaged 1.69 SOT/90 for the Red Devils and had more shots on target and more shots than anyone else in her team.
She averaged 2.01 SOT/90 at last summers European Championship.

Stanway is England’s action midfielder. A sensation at the Euros last summer, Stanway had 1+ SOT in all bar one of her appearances there, as England went on to lift the trophy.
She is England’s designated penalty taker. Despite having an effort saved against Haiti, a re-take was ordered which she slotted away.
Stanway is an exceptional distance shooter, something she’s showed time and time again. She’s never shy of taking on a shot either, she averaged 2.35 for Bayern Munich this season, with 0.70 on target.

As I say, Stanway is all action. She’s up and down, keen to press, desperate to get stuck in to tackles, whilst also operating as a key creator and goal threat for England.
To go along with her 3 shots, 1 on target, Stanway also committed 4 fouls against Haiti, and got herself in to the book. Something she’s rather prone to, as she picked up 8 booking for Bayern this season.
She’s not a malicious player. She’s just exceptionally busy, her average of 3.50 tackles per match ranks her in the top 99 percentile for her position. This sheer desire to win the ball back can lead to some clumsy challenges though, which is exactly what we saw against Haiti.
Haiti were 125/1 to beat England, the gap in quality there is huge, yet Stanway did have issues keeping tabs on her opponents. This is a sterner test, albeit one England should still win.

Veja has the task of stopping England’s interchanging wide players. Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp are key to England’s threat, with both seeing a lot of the ball against Haiti as they looked to find Alessia Russo.
We saw both players swapping positions to keep the opponents guessing. Both are keen to get on the ball and go at their full-back, which leads them to drawing regular fouls. Hemp drew 1.02 fouls/90 this season in the WSL, whilst Kelly drew 0.97.
Even if Veja can survive her time against these two without committing a foul, she then will likely have to put her tiring legs up against the electric Lauren James. James was felled an average of 2.18 times/90 in the WSL this season, she was 8th in the entire league for drawing fouls.
Veje averaged 0.80 fouls/90 for Everton this season and I think she’ll be good for 1 here. She’s primarily an attack minded full back, but she’ll be stretched defensively in this one.
