England vs Italy Stats and Bet Builder Tips Preview

England vs Ital Stats and Bet Builder Tips Preview Featured Image

Wembley Stadium is the venue between England and Italy as the top two teams in the group face off. England remain unbeaten but if they lose this game Italy will join them on 13 points so they can ill afford any slip-ups. Italy warmed up for this game with a comfortable 4-0 success vs Malta and Luciano Spalletti has started life with the Azzurri with two wins and a draw.

Gareth Southgate will be hoping that the Three Lions can take some attention away from his controversial team selection with a convincing victory in the capital.

England vs Italy predicted lineups

Big names back after friendly experiment

Gareth Southgate named an effective second string XI vs Australia in a friendly on Friday, but all of the big guns should return for this qualifying game. Jude Bellingham is set to play in a more advanced role, closer to the position he has excelled in so far at Real Madrid. Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden are favourites to get the nod on both wings, with Declan Rice and Trent Alexander-Arnold playing in midfield. Kalvin Phillips could also be an option if the manager prefers.

Injury problems in attack for the Azzurri

Italy are set to lineup in a 4-3-3 formation with Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Federico Dimarco playing at full back. They have big issues in attack where the likes of Willy Gnonto, Federico Chiesa and Ciro Immobile are all ruled out injured. That means that the trio of Moise Kean, Domenico Berardi and Giacomo Raspadori should lead the line. Italy are definitely lacking weapons and will also be without Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini.

England vs Italy Team Stats

Can England banish Euro 2020 demons?

Their domination of Group C suggests that they can having scored 16 and conceded just two in five qualifiers. Harry Maguire and John Stones have been a successful pairing for England for a sustained period regardless of club performances, and their strong defensive displays are clear to see in the graphic below – which is based on their last five competitive matches.

Where can Italy hurt England?

Midfield is a strong area of the pitch for the Italians and they have big game players on their roster who could step up at Wembley. Despite dropping points to North Macedonia and losing at home to England, Italy have been posting positive numbers this campaign and are more than capable of avoiding defeat.

It could come down to how well they deal with Bellingham.

England vs Italy Players to Watch

Jude won’t let you down

Jude Bellingham has been on fire for Real Madrid this season and now the expectation is that England find a way for him to become a consistent goalscoring threat. The former Birmingham City and Borussia Dortmund man has fired in a massive ten goals in ten matches for Real and averages around three shots per game in all competitions. In this fixture, he can be backed at 3.75 to score anytime or 1.57 to have a shot on target. Both prices look very generous for a man in such great form and merit strong consideration for any England vs Italy bet builder.

Kane and able

The England captain Harry Kane was given the night off vs Australia and watched from the bench. He should be fresh heading into this contest and hungry for goals. Kane has been in great form for Bayern Munich this season and has netted eight Bundesliga goals. He is the all-time record England goalscorer with 59 from 86 caps. That’s why he’s the shortest price of anyone to net in this game at 2.10 and just 1.20 to have one or more shots on target. With Kane being on penalties he should always be considered in any England match to add to your bet builder.

Trent steaming value with dual threat

Trent-Alexander Arnold has recently been injured but returned in the last couple of weeks and could be given a starting berth in midfield. He played at right back vs Australia but a switch of roles to how he featured in the summer qualifiers vs North Macedonia and Malta could be very possible. Alexander-Arnold is an extremely dangerous technical player who will provide a dual goalscoring and assisting threat if employed in the middle of the park. He’s a danger wherever he plays due to his set piece ability, and it stands out that he’s 3.10 to score or assist in this fixture. That looks like a juicy price to add to any bet builder for those who are feeling brave.

Berardi to take on senior attacking role

Domenico Berardi has only started two games for Italy since the spring of 2022 but could be one to watch. The Sassuolo attacker netted twice vs Malta and is someone who has a very good record in Serie A over the last few years. He has netted five times in six league games this campaign and averages 3.20 shots per game. Berardi can be backed at 4.50 to score anytime and at 1.53 just to have two or more shots which looks extremely generous to add to any Italy bet builder.

Federico to make his Dimarco?

The Italian left back is famously always a player to watch out for in the shots market. He played in a different tactical system at Inter as a wing back but last season averaged nearly two shots per 90. He is an attack-minded full back who likes to get forward and chance his luck. He is 1.20 to have one or more shots and odds-against at 2.10 for two or more which could tempt many to add to their Italy bet builder.

Moise is Kean to impress

Moise Kean is an enigmatic player who probably wouldn’t be starting this match, or be in the Italy squad, were it not for their injuries in attack. He made the most of his minutes vs Malta and supplied two assists. It will be much tougher vs England, but he can be a streaky player and the confidence he gained from the previous match could ignite a spark. He is not a player known for his goals or being selfish so taking Kean on to score or assist market at 4.10 would probably be the best option. This is certainly a value outside pick, as he knows he has a chance to impress and stay in the side if he goes well at Wembley.

England vs Italy matchups to watch

Giovanni Di Lorenzo vs Marcus Rashford

Gareth Southgate has options because Jack Grealish could come into consideration either from the start or off the bench. The good thing for Di Lorenzo is that he’s used to dealing with the likes of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in training at Napoli but he’s in for a rough ride vs Rashford and Grealish. The Italian right back is known for playing a fairly clean game but odds of 1.25 for one or more fouls do look decent for a player who has some very tough matchups.

Alessandro Bastoni vs Harry Kane

This is a very interesting matchup on both sides. Harry Kane is a very physical striker who can be hard to contain. Bastoni will totally have his hands full and he looks a massive price at 1.50 to have one or more fouls. He averages 1.1 fouls per 90 minutes for Inter this season and it’s difficult to see him play a clean game. Bastoni is the second most fouled Inter player this season drawing 1.40 per game so Harry Kane will likely test the referee too. Bastoni won a ridiculous five fouls vs Malta and is clever enough to know when to go down and obtain a cheap free kick. Kane at 1.30 to have one or more fouls must be considered.

Gianluca Mancini vs Jude Bellingham

Mancini is set to play centre back but could be the most likely man asked to keep close tabs on Jude Bellingham. Mancini tends to have a high foul count for Italy and averages 1.30 fouls per 90 this season for Roma. Some teams have had to resort to going in hard on Bellingham this year in an attempt to stop him. He has drawn a whopping 2.90 fouls per 90 in La Liga so Mancini to have one or more fouls at 1.30 makes for considerable appeal to any Italy bet builder.
