When it comes to the 2024/25 League One title, the focus has to be on Birmingham City. Having been relegated from the Championship the season prior, Birmingham have been splashing the cash, spending upwards of £10million on Jay Stansfield alone. They may be just 2 points clear of Wycombe, but they do have 2 games in hand as it stands, and it’s no surprise to see them odds one with the bookmakers for the title.
Wycombe and Wrexham are the closest challengers to Birmingham in League One, both on 51 points apiece. The pair are priced at 10/1 and 11/1 respectively, but with Wycombe losing manager Matt Bloomfield to Luton in January, you have to imagine they’ll drop off. Wrexham certainly have the foundations and solid squad from which they can build, but the bookmakers fancy Birmingham for very good reason.
The 2024/25 League One season kicked off on the 9th of August 2024 and is scheduled to finish on the 3rd of May of 2025. 24 teams are competing for the chance to be promoted to the EFL Championship.
A key date to note is that the January transfer window opened on January 1st 2024 and will close at 11pm on 31 January 2025.
Following the conclusion of the season, teams finishing from 3rd through to 6th will qualify for the League One play-off semi finals.. The winners of the two leg semi finals will proceed to the final which is set to be held between the 24th and 26th of May 2025.
Away from the league, there is the Football League Trophy. The final of the competition is scheduled for the 13th of April.
For those wishing to watch the action live on TV, Sky Sports is once again the best option as they show a range of fixtures from each match day. Sky Sports have also launched Sky Sports + as of the 2024/25 season, a free extension that allows you to shows off each League One at least 20 times over the course of the 2024/25 campaign.
One advantage that some fans may have over others when it comes to following League One football is access to certain streaming services like NowTV or iFollow which provide access to every minute of action that takes place over the course of the year – allowing them to stay up-to-date with their team’s progress while they’re away from home. As well as giving you full match coverage, these services also offer replays and highlights packages – ensuring viewers can catch up on any moments they’ve missed in between games too.
Aside from Sky Sports and streaming services, there are also various radio broadcasters who air live commentary for every single game throughout League One this season – including Talksport 2 and even local radio stations in some regions – giving fans another chance to get close-up analysis from experts within the industry.
The most successful team in the history of League One are Plymouth Argyle, who have won the title on five separate occasion. Bristol City, Doncaster Rovers, Hull City, and Wigan Athletic, who have each won the division four times.

2022-23: Plymouth Argyle
2021-22: Wigan Athletic
2020-21: Hull City
2019-20: Coventry City
2018-19: Luton Town
2017-18: Wigan Athletic
2016-17: Sheffield United
2015-16: Wigan Athletic

League One has the unique feature of being the only division in the Football League in which 4 teams get relegated. As of now, it looks a foregone conclusion that Burton will have to settle for League Two football next season, the Brewers now 11 points from safety. Just 3 points separate Crawley, Shrewsbury, and Cambridge in the remaining relegation spots, but whilst they might be close knit, they’re all at least 5 points from safety.
It’s no surprise that the current bottom 4 are the bookmaker favourites for relegation given the gap to 21st placed Bristol Rovers. All 4 of Burton, Cambridge, Crawley, and Shrewsbury are odds on to face the drop come May, with Burton as short as odds of 1.06. Bristol Rovers and Northampton are priced 2.1 and 2.38 respectively for relegation, and whilst Peterborough may look a good bit of value at 6/1, their attacking output (the second best in the league), will surely see them safe.
It looks hard to argue with the bookmakers here given the current League One landscape, but a consistent run of form from a single side, and everything could change towards the tail end of the 2024/25 League One season.
The key dates for League 1 are as follows:
9th August 2024: season kicks
1st-30th January 2025: January transfer window
13th April February 2025: EFL Trophy Final
3rd May 2025: Regular season ends
24th-26th May 2025: League 1 play-off final
