Leg 1: Over 1.5 Leicester cards
Leicester look a very solid bet in the card markets here, where they can be backed at a generous price of 1.44 to pick up two or more cards. The Foxes averaged 1.80 cards per game in the Championship last season, despite having 61.6% possession on average. They will be doing much more defending here than they were used to last season, and that should see their foul numbers increase.
Furthermore, Spurs’ opponents are always good for cards, the Lilywhites having drawn more fouls per game than any other Premier League side last season, their 13.4 being well clear of second placed Aston Villa, who won 12.40. Teams facing Spurs in the top flight picked up 2.63 cards per game during the 2023/24 campaign, a tally which puts them joint-top of that particular chart with Chelsea.
New boss Steve Cooper is yet to take charge of Leicester in a competitive fixture, but his record with Nottingham Forest last season also looks promising. Under Cooper, Forest picked up 2.41 cards per game, and saw at least two cards in 12 of his 17 matches in charge before his sacking in December.
Leg 2: Tottenham to have 6+ shots on target
Tottenham had the fourth-most shots on target per game of any Premier League side last season, averaging 5.45 across the whole campaign. As you might expect, those numbers tended to increase against weaker opponents, with Ange Postecoglou’s side averaging 6.46 shots on target per 90 against sides in the bottom five.
In 10 games against those bottom five sides, Spurs had six or more shots on target in eight, only failing to do so against Luton, who held the side from North London to just four and two shots on target in their two meetings last season. They were capable of putting up similar numbers against stronger opponents too, hitting six or more shots on target in exactly half (19) of their 38 league games in 2023/24.
The addition of Dominic Solanke should help on this front too, freeing up Son Heung-min to play his preferred wing role and cutting the reliance on Richarlison, who has struggled with injury since arriving at the club. The ex-Bournemouth man had the joint-13th most shots on target of any player in the division last season, racking up 35 in total.
Leg 3: James Maddison to have 2+ shots
James Maddison being available at this price for two shots is almost an automatic pick for this bet builder. Of likely starters, only Son (2.55) took more shots per 90 in the Premier League than Maddison’s 2.45.
The former Leicester man will be keen to put on a strong showing on his first game back at the King Power since his move to Spurs after Leicester’s relegation last summer. He was in good shooting form to end last season, having taken at least two shots in seven of his last nine league games for Tottenham.
Maddison, like his club in general, had a strong record for shots against the weaker sides in the league last season. He featured in 11 of Spurs’ 12 games against sides which made up the bottom six and took at least two shots in 10 of these 11 appearances.
Having also had the entire summer off to recover for the new season, he should get a good run out here, regardless of the score, giving him plenty of time to hit this line. It would be a big surprise if he didn’t have at least two attempts here.
LEG 4: Harry Winks to commit 2+ fouls
Another man playing against his former club, but this time having made the switch from North London to the Midlands is Harry Winks. The defensive midfielder came through the academy ranks with Spurs and will be keen to show what the club are missing having let him go.
Winks averaged a solid but unspectacular 1.14 fouls per 90 in the Championship, though we should expect those numbers to climb in the Premier League as the Foxes see less of the ball. Further to this, the 28-year-old fouled twice or more in seven of his 10 games against sides that also finished in the top six in the Championship last season. There were also signs that his foul numbers were picking up towards the end of the season, committing at least two fouls in 12 of his last 20 Championship starts for Leicester.
Here he has a good shout for multiple fouls, as he will be up against James Maddison, who draws 3.12 fouls per 90, and Rodrigo Bentancur who draws 1.52. Maddison in particular is likely to cause issues for Winks, having won multiple fouls in 13 of his 15 league starts since returning from injury last season.
