Liverpool endured a frustrating 2022/23 season in which they failed to qualify for the Champions League and did not win a trophy. Monitoring how they can bounce back has made the Liverpool transfer odds in this summer’s window fascinating viewing as they look to rebuild. The Reds’ midfield was pointed at as an area that regressed last term and the departures of Arthur Melo, James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jordan Henderson from the 2022/23 squad have offered Jurgen Klopp an opportunity to evolve, as can be seen in the targets of the Liverpool transfer odds.
Liverpool have a range of options to consider in bolstering their midfield contingent but also in many other areas of the pitch, and it is sure to be an intriguing final stretch of the transfer window at Anfield. We have taken a look at four players who could be on their way to Merseyside, ranging from prices as big as 7/1 to an odds-on quote, in aiming to elevate the Reds’ chances of rejoining the Premier League title race next season.

Kalvin Phillips a surprise name in Liverpool transfer odds
Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister have arrived already this summer but with Fabinho’s decline defensive midfield may also need addressing. Manchester City and England squad player Kalvin Phillips could be an option and journalist Dominic King has endorsed the potential move.
Phillips is as large as 6/1 in the Liverpool transfer odds and this could be one to drag on into the start of the season but before the transfer deadline, depending on how many minutes the 27-year-old is given by Pep Guardiola. The Spanish coach has a rather unique mindset in that he welcomes player exits if they are not completely settled, regardless of quality, and a move to Liverpool that would increase his playing time could be attractive at this stage of his career.
Slipping out of the Champions League may have affected Liverpool’s transfer budget this summer, and especially with Phillips having five years left on his deal at the Etihad Stadium, an agreement may be hard to come to. City could also be hesitant to sell to a direct rival.

Romeo Lavia on the brink?
Another player with Manchester City connections who is clearly on the radar of the Liverpool transfer odds is Romeo Lavia. The precocious central midfielder endured a difficult first full season, from a collective standpoint, in the Premier League with Southampton last campaign, as the Saints finished rock bottom under the leadership of, first, Ralph Hasenhuttl, Nathan Jones and then Ruben Selles.
The Saints are seemingly looking to sell in coping with the financial impact of relegation and the 19-year-old, who is already a senior international for Belgium, is attracting interest from big seven clubs in the Premier League. Liverpool is the logical destination given the age make-up of their squad and the room for manoeuvre in midfield.
It is very unlikely that both Phillips and Lavia will sign for the Reds, will both players most suited to slotting in ahead of Fabinho in Klopp’s starting XI.

Snatch Federico Chiesa away from Juventus?
Juventus have been through the wringer in the last couple of seasons, they are now a club and team unrecognisable from the golden era of competing for the Champions League and routinely winning Serie A under Massimiliano Allegri. The Old Lady will not be in next season’s Champions League and, with that in mind, a move to Anfield would not be seen as a sideways one, not to mention the wages that the Reds could probably offer Chiesa in comparison.
Newcastle United are not yet out of the race to land the Italian livewire, as per Gazzetta Dello Sport, and while the Magpies did qualify for the Champions League, the draw of Jurgen Klopp remains greater than that of Eddie Howe. With Fabio Carvalho heading out on loan to RB Leipzig, there is room on the depth chart for an addition in the frontline and Chiesa may fit that bill.
The 25-year-old only has two years left on his deal in Turin which likely makes him an affordable option for the Reds’ hierarchy to consider. Chiesa would offer a direct point of difference to the Reds’ current wide attacking options of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, while he also has the intensity to adapt to Klopp’s demanding pressing style.

Joshua Kimmich would be a serious statement
Despite pipping Borussia Dortmund to the Bundesliga title on the final day of last season, it was a rather concerning 2022/23 campaign for Bayern Munich and their first since the departure of Robert Lewandowski. Joshua Kimmich has seamlessly transitioned from being a full back in the early part of his career to becoming one of the best central midfielders in the world in his mid to late 20s. The 28-year-old is very comfortable on the ball with a wide range of passing and has taken on greater leadership responsibilities for Bayern in recent years.
With two years left on his contract, a player of Kimmich’s quality will be on the radar of the biggest clubs in Europe, such is his ability, and without Champions League it is difficult to see the Reds competing financially for his signature if he is to move on this summer. Manchester City are a shorter price in the transfer odds, and it is difficult to justify choosing the Reds over a move to Manchester right now. Landing Kimmich would be a statement of intent and, depending on how they begin the season, they could become a more attractive destination in a matter of weeks.
Klopp is an admirer of Kimmich, according to the Mail, and the Bavarians may be willing to relinquish the German if it is to benefit their push to sign no. 1 target Harry Kane in this transfer window. If Klopp was not at the helm at Liverpool it seems unlikely that the odds would be as short as 6/1.
