Man City v Sevilla Stats and Bet Builder Tips Preview

Manchester City vs Sevilla Stats and Bet Builder Tips Preview Featured Image

The first piece of European silverware of the season is up for grabs as first-time Champions League winners Manchester City take on Europa League specialists Sevilla. Both managers will be hoping that a good result will set the precedent for the season that is to come. It is certainly an eye-catching fixture and it will be interesting to see how both teams will approach the game.

Both teams suffered contrasting fortunes in their opening fixtures in their respective leagues, with Erling Haaland at the double as City dispatched newly-promoted Burnley with a comfortable 3-0 victory. Sevilla, on the other hand, suffered a late opening La Liga weekend 2-1 defeat at home at the hands of Valencia, with Youssef En-Nesyri grabbing their only goal of the game.

Sevilla will be aiming to put their league result to the back of their minds as they attempt to win the Super Cup for the second time in their history. We have provided our heavily researched Man City vs Sevilla bet builder tips, with a focus on key players and who will go head-to-head in the battles to look out for.

Man City vs Sevilla Predicted Lineups

Pep roulette set to strike again?

As always, Man City boss Pep Guardiola is expected to make a whole host of changes for Wednesday evening’s fixture. The Spaniard has had to deal with the devastating news that star creator Kevin De Bruyne is set to be sidelined for at least a few months and he now has to find a replacement in his side to fill the void left by the Belgian. The frightening forward pairing of Haaland and Julian Alvarez are likely to start in attack again for City.

There could be a first City start in defence for summer signing Josko Gvardiol. Stefan Ortega will come in instead of Ederson, as is usually the case in cup competitions outside of the Champions League for City.

More of the same for Sevilla

One might be forgiven for thinking that Jose Luis Mendilibar would want to change his team massively following their opening day defeat, however, the Spaniard is expected to hardly change his side at all. Mendilibar favours his teams to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation and that is highly likely to be the case again on Wednesday evening.

The aforementioned En-Nesyri will lead the line, whilst experienced duo Joan Jordan and Ivan Rakitic will add some solidity to Sevilla’s midfield. The defence is expected to be the same, and they could play a big role in the outcome of any Man City v Sevilla bet builder.

Man City vs Sevilla Team Stats

Pure dominance from City

Last season in the Champions League, Man City were a force to be reckoned with, demolishing teams who in seasons gone by, they would have struggled against. City scored the most goals in the competition (32), six more than the next highest, with only Barcelona, who were eliminated at the group stage, having a higher average possession per 90 than City’s 60.7%.

We expect the Super Cup final to follow a similar pattern, with the English side controlling the tempo of the game and this is definitely something to keep an eye on when putting together a Man City bet builder.

A tale of two competitions for Sevilla

Although they may see themselves as the “experts of the Europa League”, Sevilla struggled in the Champions League last campaign, with a third-placed finish in the group being what caused them to drop to the Europa League in the first place. In just six games in the Champions League last term, the Spanish side conceded 12 goals, an average of two goals per game, whereas in nine games in the Europa League, they conceded just eight. For Mendilibar and his side, the focus will be on bridging the gap between the two competitions and seeing if they can push themselves to compete at Europe’s top level.

Man City vs Sevilla Players to Watch

Talisman Haaland on course for another season of goals

Erling Haaland couldn’t have asked for a better start to life at Manchester City, with the Norwegian forward breaking a whole host of records in his maiden season in England. Haaland has already had a lightning start to the season, bagging two goals in his side’s opening day win at Burnley.

Last term, in the Champions League, the striker averaged 1.1 goals per game from an average of 3.7 shots per game, highlighting Haaland’s prolific nature in front of goal. Most definitely someone to consider when looking at a Man City v Sevilla bet builder.

Grealish to provide the creative spark

Upon his arrival to Manchester City for a club record fee, Jack Grealish was heavily criticised, as many felt that he wouldn’t be able to live up to the price tag. Granted, in his first season, the winger failed to meet expectations but more than met them last term with his performances catching the eye. The 27-year-old was one of City’s main creative sparks in their treble-winning side, boasting an impressive average of 2.7 key passes per game in the Champions League.

Kovacic: The one to fill the De Bruyne void?

With the news that star man Kevin De Bruyne is set to miss a few months of the season with injury, City need to find another midfielder within their ranks who can step up the plate. New signing Mateo Kovacic will be hoping that he can be the man to do just that. The Croatian boasted a pass success rate of 87.9% in the Champions League last term for Chelsea and he possesses the creative ability to unlock any defence.

En-Nesyri hoping to be a goal threat

Though Sevilla will not be expecting to have many chances on Wednesday night, they will be hoping that Moroccan Youssef En-Nesyri will be on form for them. The forward was Sevilla’s top scorer in Europe last term, with six goals across both the Champions League and Europa League. The 26-year-old averaged 2.6 shots per game in the Europa League and three per game in the Champions League, showing that the forward isn’t shy of pulling the trigger. This could be yet another interesting angle to consider for a Sevilla builder.

Bade to be solid in defence

Frenchman Loic Bade is likely to be one of a pair given the thankless task of dealing with City’s forward line and his role in the game could be a very important one. The centre half was sent off at the weekend against Valencia and is a defender who enjoys a tackle. He averaged 2.2 tackles per game in the Europa League last season and could put up similar numbers in Wednesday evening’s game.

Hot-head Acuna aiming to control temperament

It is no secret that Marcos Acuna is a player who likes to get stuck in and is certainly no stranger to a yellow card. The Argentinian committed the most fouls on average per game in the Sevilla squad in both the Champions League and the Europa League last term , with two and 1.9 respectively. On the other hand, Acuna often enjoys bombing down the wing and providing some attacking output for his side and could be well worth a look at in that respect.

Man City vs Sevilla Matchups to Watch

Youssef En-Nesyri vs Josko Gvardiol

Being the main focal point in Sevilla’s attack against a Manchester City side that will inevitably control the ball for the majority of the game, it is going to be a very difficult task for Youssef En-Nesyri. New City defender Josko Gvardiol is likely to be the man tasked with dealing with the threat of the Sevilla striker and the one whose aim will be to limit the Moroccan to as few chances as possible.

The Croatian gave away an average of 0.2 fouls in the Champions League in 2022/23 across six games, highlighting the fact that he is a defender who stands off as opposed to one who will dive in and make a challenge. One to avoid in fouls markets for the timebeing.

Jack Grealish vs Marcos Acuna

Perhaps the most interesting matchup that will take place on Wednesday night, City’s silky winger is an expert in drawing a foul from his opposition, with Grealish being fouled an average of 2.5 times per game in Europe last term. The ex-Villa man has a knack for drawing his opponents in before inducing them to make a challenge and it is very wise to suggest we will see much of the same on Wednesday evening. As mentioned before, Acuna is no stranger to a foul and is likely to already be on the referee’s radar.

Erling Haaland vs Loic Bade

It is almost impossible to mention Manchester City nowadays without mentioning Erling Haaland in the same breath. The Norwegian has been on unbelievable form since joining from Borussia Dortmund and that shows no signs of letting up anytime soon.

23-year-old Bade is the man that will be paying close attention to Haaland and it must be said he won’t be the envy of any of his teammates. Haaland is not afraid to pull the trigger in front of goal and Bade will be well aware of that fact. The Frenchman averaged one block per game in the Europa League in 2022/23 and he will be aiming to continue that form into Wednesday evening’s game.
