Man City vs Newcastle Stats and Bet Builder Tips Preview

Manchester City vs Newcastle United Stats and Bet Builder Tips Preview Featured Image

Both sides got off to a winning start in the Premier League last week and will be looking to maintain their 100% record despite strong opponents. Manchester City added to their trophy cabinet by beating Sevilla on penalties to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night. Can Newcastle take advantage of some lingering celebrations?

Eddie Howe’s men pushed City twice last season, including a wild 3-3 draw at St James’ Park. This time the two teams meet in a late Saturday evening kick-off in Manchester in what is a tantalising clash between 1st and 4th from last season, that will surely make for great bet builders research.

Pep Guardiola and the champions will be desperate to show that they are capable of continuing their relentless form in Kevin de Bruyne’s absence, with the Belgian ruled out for potentially the remainder of the calendar year.

Man City vs Newcastle Predicted lineups

Pep hoping that Dias will be passed fit

John Stones and Bernardo Silva are confirmed absentees for Man City, as Guardiola confirmed in his pre-match press conference. He is hopeful that centre back Ruben Dias should be fit following a head injury. Julian Alvarez was benched for the Super Cup but should come back into the starting XI here, with Phil Foden likely to retain his role on the right-hand side. The City XI is difficult to predict because they played in midweek. The defensive selections and even formation especially remain slightly volatile.

Newcastle should be unchanged after brilliant win

Joe Willock and Emil Krafth are still on the sidelines for Newcastle. It is likely that Eddie Howe names an unchanged XI after beating Aston Villa 5-1 so impressively last weekend. The Toon Army will line up in Howe’s preferred 4-3-3 formation with Callum Wilson still consigned to the bench despite coming on as a substitute last week to score.

Man City vs Newcastle team stats

City dominated the stats in opening fixture yet again

Man City had the best defensive record last season and they restricted Burnley to scraps last week, conceding an xGA of just 0.31. City usually dominate all the metrics that matter and outshot the Clarets 17-6 while conceding just one shot on target. It was an easy night for Ederson, but he was tested much more in midweek by Sevilla where he made some crucial saves. City were surprisingly out-cornered 6-5 by Burnley in their Premier League opener but didn’t concede a single one vs Sevilla.

Newcastle attack impressive vs Villa

Newcastle were impressive as they smashed Villa 5-1 and they were good value for their win. No team had a higher xG (4.32) in the Premier League opening round than the Magpies who racked up an impressive 13 shots on target from 17 attempts. That is obviously incredible accuracy and hard to maintain but does show that the Magpies’ attackers are in sharp form to start off the season. They did concede 16 shots at the other end though and gave Villa a few chances. Newcastle won the corner battle 6-5 last week and are generally a team known for playing for set pieces under Eddie Howe.

Man City vs Newcastle players to watch

Can Newcastle keep Haaland quiet?

Erling Haaland was straight back to his old self against Burnley last week racking up a brace. He was kept very quiet by Sevilla in midweek though, Sevilla defended deep and restricted his space. Haaland could only conjure up a single shot which was off target. He is a man who raises it for the big occasion so will be fired up here. He is priced at just 1.14 for a shot on target and 1.83 to score anytime. This doesn’t feel amazing vs a creditable team but will prove popular with some.

Alvarez accuracy some value

With all the attention on Haaland, Argentinian World Cup winner Julian Alvarez could shine again in a deeper role. He weighed in with an assist last week and had three shots, with one on target. Of his 38 shots in the Premier League last season 19 tested the keeper which is exactly a 50% accuracy ratio. He may represent better value than Haaland considering he’s 2.63 to score anytime, 2.10 to score or assist and 1.25 to have one or more shots on target. His accuracy can’t go ignored and these are several possible options to add to your Man City bet builder.

Rodri to keep looking for goals

Man City’s midfield maestro who keeps relegating the Yorkshire Pirlo Kalvin Phillips to the bench, has become an increasingly effective offensive weapon for Guardiola’s men. He fired in a massive four shots last week and managed to hit the back of the net. Against teams who defend deep he is usually a candidate to try his luck at some stage. It was similar in midweek vs Sevilla where he attempted three shots. Rodri is only 1.14 to have one or more shots but a more appealing price is for two or more at 1.83.

Swedish shooting sensation to fire again

Alexander Isak should get the nod upfront again where he is more effective. He was impressive last week and arguably man of the match material vs Villa. Isak had three shots and all of them were on target. This isn’t a surprise because he was mightily accurate last season converting 41 shots into 22 on target which is a fantastic ratio. When Isak gets a chance, he can be relied upon to hit the target so odds of 1.44 for at least one shot on target here looks good. Newcastle will have limited chances but should hit City on the break a few times where the former AIK and Real Sociedad man could profit.

Bruno value to try his luck

Bruno Guimaraes fired in 25 shots in 29 starts last season which is slightly less than one per game. This is the sort of match where he might get limited opportunities but against City, sometimes you have to make something happen and Newcastle will be looking towards their midfield talisman to make a difference. The Brazilian warmed up for this fixture with two shots vs Villa last week and he found the target once. He looked sharp and for those who are brave, 1.62 on the Brazilian just to have a single shot or more could be worth adding to your Newcastle bet builder.

Man City vs Newcastle matchups to watch

Kieran Trippier vs Jack Grealish

This should be an interesting clash between two England colleagues. Jack Grealish is known for being one of the most fouled men in the Premier League and will keep Trippier very busy. The Toon Army captain is usually good for at least one foul per game, racking up 44 offences in 35 starts last season. He is 1.25 to produce at least one foul and that should be very reliable. Grealish was up to his old tricks on Wednesday night and drew three fouls out of Sevilla. It would be a surprise if Trippier played a clean match

Rodri vs Bruno Guimaraes

This is going to be a crucial clash in midfield between the two engines of both teams. It’s Spain vs Brazil with plenty of pride at stake and both should get stuck in. Rodri racked up 46 fouls in 32 starts last season which is roughly 1.5 per game. He can be backed at 1.17 for one foul or 1.83 for two or more. Bruno Guimaraes is similarly priced and either option can make an appeal for your Man City vs Newcastle bet builder. Guimaraes averaged around 1.33 fouls per game in the Premier League last year and rarely plays a match unblemished.

Man City vs Newcastle

Calendar 19th August

Football icon Newcastle +2 Handicap
Arrow down

This could be a favourable time to face Man City. They only won the Super Cup three nights ago so might still be slightly distracted.

Kevin de Bruyne has been ruled out for four months and Sevilla showed in midweek that they can be vulnerable with the right gameplan. Newcastle pushed City close twice last year, drawing 3-3 at home and were unlucky to lose 2-0 in Manchester.

The Magpies only lost three away games in the entirety of last season and only Villa and City beat them by more than one goal. They can stay close here and at worst only suffer a tight defeat. If they lose by one goal or draw or win, this selection will cop.

Football icon Alexander Isak 1+ Shots on Target
Arrow down

Newcastle probably won’t have that many shots in this match, but Sevilla converted half of their eight attempts on target vs the Cityzens in midweek.

Alexander Isak had a shooting accuracy of over 50% last season and didn’t miss the target once in the opener vs Villa. He looks sharp and if he gets a chance, you’d back him to test the gloves of Ederson.

Football icon Julian Alvarez 1+ Shots on Target
Arrow down

There is so much attention on Haaland that Alvarez might be the beneficiary of extra time and space. He is another player who has a historically high accuracy from shooting positions, 50% of his shots were on target last season.

He does not waste opportunities and sitting in a slightly deeper role, an opportunity should develop at some point for him to fire at Nick Pope.

Football icon Over 3.5 cards
Arrow down

Man City are known for being quite a clean team but in this sort of match, things are likely to get more feisty. In each meeting between the two teams last season exactly six cards were shown, and this isn’t a surprise.

Newcastle will happily play the dark arts of football if required. They are known for time-wasting and all sorts so referee Rob Jones might have his hands full. At this stage of the season when referees are often stricter, and in a prime-time game where he will want to be professional, the chances are he dishes at least four cards, considering what is at stake.
