Middlesbrough vs Chelsea Predicted Lineups

Several absentees for Boro

The hosts do have several players on the sidelines. First choice keeper Seny Dieng is on Africa Cup of Nations Cup duty for Senegal whilst Samuel Silvera and Riley McGree are playing at the Asia Cup. Attacker Morgan Rogers is suspended due to yellow card accumulation, while Finn Azaz and Sam Greenwood are both cup tied. Michael Carrick is expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Josh Coburn leading the line.

Broja continues to lead the line

The Chelsea XI is never the easiest to predict but Mauricio Pochettino will surely go as strong as he can. A 4-2-3-1 system is expected with Axel Disasi partnering Tiago Silva in central defence. The West London outfit have a lot of injury concerns with about a dozen players still potentially on the sidelines. Christopher Nkunku recently returned from a long lay-off but is expected to miss 2-3 weeks with a new injury. Armando Broja should continue to lead the line upfront with Nikolas Jackson on AFCON duty with Senegal.

Middlesbrough vs Chelsea Team Stats

Could Boro adopt a defensive stance?

Middlesbrough have respectable xG and xGA figures but this will be considerably harder for them against Premier League opposition. They have restricted teams to just 11.08 shots against per match which might be something to keep an eye on. Could they operate a defensive strategy as an underdog? Corners have been high in Boro games but they have been extremely well disciplined picking up only 1.92 cards per contest on average.

Team Stats1

Chelsea cards come under close consideration

Chelsea are underperforming their xG total of 1.97 per game. They have only averaged 1.70 goals and too many players have simply misfired in front of goal. A lot of Chelsea stats are quite mediocre though which is probably why they have been a middle-of-the-road team this term. Corners have been on the high side in Chelsea games at 10.20 and it is noticeable that cards have flowed at a huge average of 6.50 per contest.

Middlesbrough vs Chelsea Shots and Shots on Target Stats

Latte Lath the best brew for shots

Michael Carrick’s men might not be expected to have that many shots here considering they are a significant underdog. Nobody on this list apart from Emmanuel Latte Lath averages more than one shot on target per 90 so it’s probably more sensible to look into the shots market. Latte Lath is 1.73 to hit the target and 1.22 to have two or more shot attempts in the game. If Josh Coburn starts upfront then the 1.33 on offer that he has a couple of efforts could be excellent bet builder material, Matt Crooks at the same price could be another alternative.

21

King Cole the most accurate option

Chelsea are not a team who can be relied on for shot accuracy. Too many of their players fire wide of the mark and similar to Boro the best option is surely to look into the shots market. Cole Palmer remains the exception, perhaps aided by the fact he should be on penalty duty. He can be backed at 1.44 to have one or more shots on target which might be the best option to add to your Chelsea bet builder. Noni Madueke loves a shot and the 1.44 on offer he tries two or more attempts could look massive. He scored a fine goal vs Luton recently so his tail should be up.

Middlesbrough vs Chelsea Goals and Assists Stats

Unconventional Crooks in with a shout

The most likely scorers for Boro would appear to be forwards Josh Coburn or Emmanuel Latte Lath. Both could get opportunities on the break and Chelsea’s defence is hardly watertight. Both are priced at 4.0 to score at anytime for those who are feeling brave. Matt Crooks could be the best dual threat option for Boro and is 3.20 to score or assist.

31

Can Sterling get back on the money?

This match could be a great opportunity for Raheem Sterling to dominate and strut his stuff. He is a genuine dual threat option and is priced at 2.0 to score or assist. Cole Palmer is an even bigger price in this market at 2.20 and offers tremendous value to any Chelsea bet builder. Palmer at 3.0 to score anytime also looks massive when you consider he’s on penalty duty. Armando Broja is set to start upfront and 2.50 on him to hit the back of the net is another generous price.

Middlesbrough Cards and Fouls Stats

Attacking press could give away cheap free kicks

Boro have been one of the cleanest teams in the Championship this season ranking fifth-lowest for cards obtained. They pick up less than two cards per game. In terms of fouling, they are mid rank at 11.40 per game. Michael Carrick likes his attackers to press hard and in a safer area of the field we can perhaps expect the trio of Isaiah Jones, Crooks and Coburn to give away some cheap free kicks. Crooks and Jones are priced at 1.83 to commit two or more fouls which you could add to your Middlesbrough bet builder.

41

Chelsea are the fifth most fouled team in the Premier League this season and one thing they do well is to win free kicks on a regular basis. They have several players who have high flair and dribbling attributes. Individuals such as Raheem Sterling, Malo Gusto and Noni Madueke could cause havoc, especially in the wide areas. Both Boro full backs Rav van den Berg and Alex Bangura could be vulnerable. Berg to foul once or more at 1.50 appeals.

51

Chelsea Cards and Fouls Stats

Dirty Chelsea a magnet for cards

No team has picked up more cards than Chelsea in the Premier League this season. They have racked up 61 yellows and 3 reds at an average of 3.40 per game. They also rank fourth most for fouls at 12.60 per game. They should have plenty of the ball here but will certainly play cynically if needed. They are also the sort of team who pick up a lot of cards for dissent as well. Players such as Conor Galagher and Raheem Sterling stand out as potential candidates. Gallagher is 1.57 to commit two or more fouls and 3.50 to be carded.

42

Middlesbrough rank in the top six for most fouled teams in the Championship this season at exactly 11 per game. This will be a different dimension though facing Premier League opposition. The Boro left-hand side could cause potential problems with Bangura and Jones being tricky customers. The players on this list are often only on the field for an hour or less which might distort statistics.
