The first game back from the international break in the Premier League is seventh versus tenth as West Ham travel up to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle.

Newcastle arrive to this game having won just one of their last five games in all competitions, a 3-0 home win over Wolves at the start of March. They were knocked out of the FA Cup by Man City before the international break, having lost to Chelsea in the Premier League the Monday before their cup exit.

Eddie Howe then will be hoping to kickstart their run-in with a big win here. They are much stronger at home than on the road but this will not be an easy game by any means, with David Moyes’ Hammers quietly having another impressive season.

After dropping off in terms of league position last season, then losing Declan Rice in the summer, it looked as though West Ham would struggle to juggle their Premier League and Europa League commitments. Moyes however has done well, guiding the Hammers to seventh, and a likely European spot if they can remain there until the end of the season.

They overcame Freiburg in the Europa League last 16 with a 5-0 home win after losing 1-0 in Germany, and now face high-flying Leverkusen in the next round. It will be a tough ask to reach a third consecutive European semi-final under Moyes but write them off at your own peril.

There is plenty riding on this game for two sides with ambitions of playing in Europe again next season, and if it is anything like their 2-2 draw earlier in the season it should be a cracker. Newcastle vs West Ham predicted lineups

Back to the 4-3-3 for Eddie Howe

Away to the treble winners Man City, Howe experimented with a 5-3-2 formation, but he should return to his usual 4-3-3 here. That would mean a return for Miguel Almiron on the right alongside Gordon and Isak, with Jacob Murphy dropping to the bench. Sven Botman suffered a cruciate ligament injury which is expected to keep him out until 2025, so it will be Schar and Lascelles as the centre-back pairing here. Tino Livramento will play at right-back with Trippier still injured, whilst Dan Burn and the midfield three of Guimaraes, Willock and Longstaff will all keep their spots from the 2-0 defeat to City.

Two changes from Moyes

James Ward-Prowse missed out in West Ham’s last game against Aston Villa, Moyes preferring the pace of Kudus to Ward-Prowse central and Paqueta out wide to combat the Villans high line. He is likely to return Ward-Prowse to the starting lineup here, with Kudus the main to miss out as Paqueta starts on the left. Kalvin Phillips did not make the England squad so he may get the nod over Tomas Soucek who played 180 minutes for Czechia over the break, with the rest of the lineup being as they were against Villa two weeks ago.

Newcastle vs West Ham team stats

Expect the goals to flow at St. James’

Though both of these sides can be inconsistent, Newcastle’s games have consistently been high-scoring in recent weeks. In fact, they have now gone 10 Premier League games in a row with at least three goals being scored, a run which stretches back to Boxing Day last year. Newcastle have scored in each game and have conceded in all but one of these, so backing over 2.5 goals here at 1.45 looks a smart play, especially as this would have cashed in five of West Ham’s last six league games also.

Hammers upping their shooting numbers in recent weeks

After a run of three straight league defeats, West Ham are now unbeaten in four, and their attacking unit is beginning to click into gear with Paqueta and Antonio now back in the side, and Jarrod Bowen back in his preferred role on the right. They have had at least four shots on target in each of these four games, and they will fancy their chances of doing the same again here against a very disjointed Newcastle backline missing Trippier and Botman. Today’s hosts have given up at least four shots on target in 12 of their last 14 league games, so backing the Hammers for four or more here at 1.40 looks a solid bet.

Newcastle VS West Ham SHOTS AND SHOTS ON TARGET stats

Best value can be found on Anthony Gordon

Fresh from his England senior debut, Anthony Gordon is doubtless walking on air right now. The 23-year-old has been exceptional for Newcastle this season, silencing the doubters after he was bought for around £40m. His consistency recently has been superb, hitting a shot on target in seven of his last eight league games in which he played at least 45 minutes. Gordon averages 0.91 shots on target per 90, and he can be backed to hit another here at 1.40.

28 03 2024 NEWCASTLE UNITED betbuilder stats pack SHOOTING

Paqueta’s shooting undervalued by the bookies

The Brazilian is integral to the success of this West Ham side, and since his return they are unbeaten in the league. He has taken at least two shots in each of the four games in this four-match unbeaten streak and has now had two or more shots in seven of his last eight league starts in which he played over 45 minutes. Paqueta averages 1.57 shots per 90 and can be backed to have two or more shots here again at 1.83.

Newcastle VS West Ham GOALS AND ASSISTS stats

Isak remains the main man for goals

The favourite in this market for a reason, Newcastle’s Swedish striker has bagged 12 league goals from just 20 league games this season. He also has the most goals without a single assist in the league this season, so we are sticking strictly to the goalscoring markets here. Excluding the game against Aston Villa in which he came off with a first half injury, Isak has now scored in five of his last six starts for Newcastle in the Premier League, including in his last two league starts against Wolves and Chelsea. He is always the most likely player to find the net when on the pitch for Newcastle, and he can be backed to score at a very reasonable price, 2.10.

28 03 2024 NEWCASTLE UNITED betbuilder stats pack GOALSCORING

Bowen offers value to score or assist

After a mini goal contribution drought, Bowen has been back amongst the goals in recent weeks, snapping a seven game goal drought in the league by bagging a hattrick against Brentford. He then secured an assist against Everton before bagging a goal and an assist against Freiburg prior to the international break, meaning Bowen has six goal contributions in his last six West Ham games. If West Ham score today, it would be no surprise to see Bowen heavily involved, so backing him to score or assist at 2.40 is a nice odds boosting option.

Newcastle CARDS AND FOULS stats

Jamaal Lascelles with a tough assignment

As Newcastle’s right-sided centre-back, Lascelles will have to deal with both Michail Antonio, and Lucas Paqueta coming inside from West Ham’s left. Between them these two draw over four fouls per 90 (2.55 from Paqueta and 1.58 from Antonio), whilst Lascelles commits more fouls than any other Newcastle player at 1.44 fouls per 90. He is surprisingly good value to commit a single foul at 1.44 (something he has done in 11 of his 12 league starts this season), but it may also be worth a look at Lascelles in the card markets, where he can be backed at odds of 4.5 to be shown a card.

28 03 2024 NEWCASTLE UNITED betbuilder stats pack CARDS FOR

Phillips’ West Ham career has gotten off to an inauspicious start, with errors leading to goals and a red card in just eight appearances so far. He has started just six competitive games all season for England, West Ham and Man City, however he has been fouled in each of these six games. He is averaging 1.33 fouls won per 90 this season and will be up against Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes. The latter of these two commits over a foul per 90 (1.33), and with Phillips sitting at 1.73 to be fouled, the value looks superb considering his record when starting games.

West HAM CARDS AND FOULS stats

Paqueta looks a solid card option

Lucas Paqueta should be back out on the left-wing here, having played centrally in his last four games for club and country. He commits 1.67 fouls per 90, enough to rank third in the West Ham side, but his value in the foul markets is non-existent, sitting at just 1.08 to commit a foul. Instead, he may be a good option in the card markets, where he can be backed to be shown a card at 2.60. The Brazilian has been booked nine times for the Hammers this season, and eight of these came in games where he played on the left, which he is expected to do again here. Furthermore, he is up against Tino Livramento who draws 2.22 fouls per 90, the second-most of any Newcastle player.

28 03 2024 WEST HAM betbuilder stats pack CARDS FOR

No player in the Premier League has been fouled more than Bruno Guimaraes, who averages a quite ridiculous 3.12 fouls per 90. The Brazilian is always being asked to receive and progress the ball in tight spaces and his close control means missed tackles quickly become fouls. West Ham’s likely midfield pairing Kalvin Phillips and Edson Alvarez are more than happy to put a foot in, Phillips committing four fouls per 90 so far in his short West Ham career, whilst Alvarez sits at 1.29 per 90. With Guimaraes having been fouled three or more times in eight of his last nine Newcastle games, backing him to be fouled either twice (1.36) or three times (evens) both look like great plays here.
