Leg 1: Tottenham To Win the First Half
Tottenham have been fantastic at starting games strongly this season and we will look to take advantage of that fact by backing them to lead this game at half time.
Spurs have gone into the break in front in five straight games in the Premier League and Europa League, and in seven of their nine games in both competitions so far this season. They may have lost 3-2 to Brighton in their last game before the international break, but the Lilywhites went in at half time with a two-goal advantage.
Prior to this they lead Ferencvaros, Man United and Qarabağ 1-0 at the break, winning all three games. They also came from a goal down to lead Brentford 2-1 at the break before this, and began the season winning at half time against Everton and Leicester. Only against Arsenal (0-0) and away at Newcastle (0-1) have Ange Postecoglou’s side not had their noses in front at the interval.
West Ham, meanwhile, have been losing at half time in five of their last six games in all competitions. The Hammers have conceded in the first half in all but one of their seven Premier League games this season.
Leg 2: Brennan Johnson To Have 1+ Shots On Target
Brennan Johnson is maybe the form player in the Premier League right now, having bagged a goal in seven straight games for club and country, a record that he has maintained despite being hooked at half time in two of these seven matches.
The Wales international has taken more shots per 90 than any Tottenham player to have featured for more than 90 minutes in the Premier League, at 3.68. From those 3.68 shots per 90, Johnson has averaged an impressive 1.23 shots on target per 90 in the top flight this season.
Despite starting only nine of his 13 appearances for Spurs and Wales, the 23-year-old has had a shot on target in 11 games, failing to hit the target in a Spurs shirt only once this season, way back in August when facing Everton.
Since then Johnson has managed to notch a shot on target in seven straight games for Spurs, including his 26-minute cameo from the bench against Ferencvaros where he had three shots and scored for what was then the fifth-straight game.
Against what has proven to be a lacklustre West Ham defence, we would expect Johnson to get plenty of chances, and to test Areola at least once.
Leg 3: Mohammed Kudus to have 2+ Shots
The price for Mohammed Kudus to take two shots looks to be way too high here. The Ghana international is averaging a huge 3.13 shots per 90 in the league this season and has now had at least two shots in all seven of West Ham’s Premier League games.
Aside from their 1-1 draw with Brentford in which he was taken off at half time, Kudus generally plays upwards of 80 minutes, so should have plenty of time to make two attempts on goal here.
It is not a case of the 24-year-old being a flat-track bully either, as he has registered two or more shots against Man City and Chelsea, despite his side being outclassed on both occasions. His pace and ability on the ball are invaluable to this West Ham side when they come under sustained pressure.
He is surrounded with players who are adept at playing on the counter, and that ensures that Kudus gets regular chances even when his side are not really in the game. We expect Spurs to be on top here, but that should not prevent Kudus from shooting at least twice across the 90 minutes.
Leg 4: Aaron Wan-Bissaka to commit 1+ Fouls
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has played on the right and the left for the Hammers this season, but is expected to feature down the right here, which will put him up against Spurs’ Heung-min Son.
The 26-year-old has fouled 1.51 times per 90 in the Premier League so far this season, a mark that puts him amongst the worst offenders in a West Ham shirt. Of those expected to start here, only Lucas Paqueta and Tomas Soucek have fouled more frequently.
He has now committed a foul in five of his six league starts for the Hammers, and those numbers have shot up across his last two starts, fouling twice against Brentford and four times against Ipswich, for six fouls in two games.
It is unlikely to be any easier here, with Son having won 1.0 fouls per 90 in the Premier League and drawing at least one foul in five of his six league starts. Pedro Porro will also be in the vicinity of Wan-Bissaka, the Spaniard winning 1.29 fouls per 90 and drawing a foul in seven of his eight starts for Spurs this season.
