West Ham vs Chelsea Stats and Bet Builder Tips Preview

West Ham vs Chelsea Stats and Bet Builder Tips Preview Featured Image

It is a tasty London Derby on Sunday afternoon as West Ham take on Chelsea at the London Stadium. Both sides head into the fixture having drawn their opening fixtures 1-1 against Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively and they each will be aiming to secure their first three points of the 2023/24 Premier League season. There were promising signs for Chelsea in the game at Stamford Bridge against Liverpool and they could perhaps consider themselves unlucky that they didn’t come away from the game with a win.

Both teams have been very active in the transfer market, Chelsea in particular who have brought in 10 new signings this summer with Moises Caicedo from Brighton being the standout capture for the Blues as he cost a Premier League record fee of £111m. West Ham have recruited wisely in their attempt to fill the void left by club captain Declan Rice following his departure to Arsenal, with James Ward-Prowse from Southampton looking to be a very sensible signing from the Hammers.  This will all be analysed in this piece as we provide West Ham v Chelsea bet builder tips, with a focus on key players and who will go head to head in the battles to look out for.

West Ham v Chelsea Predicted Lineups

New man Ward-Prowse to come in for Hammers?

The Hammers struggled to get any real foothold in their opening game of the season against Bournemouth as they had just 37% of possession in a fixture they might have expected to win. In between last week’s game and their matchup against Chelsea at the weekend, West Ham have brought in Southampton’s midfield dynamo James Ward-Prowse to give them a little bit more impetus in the middle of the park. It is highly likely that the Englishman will slot straight into the West Ham side alongside Tomas Soucek in a midfield pairing. Ward-Prowse is notorious for his potency on set pieces and that could prove invaluable for the Hammers due to the height they possess within their side. They could wind up being very formidable from set plays in the coming season.

Injuries lead to enforced changes to Chelsea starting XI

It was a promising performance from Chelsea in their opening fixture at home to Liverpool and it was a complete contrast to the levels we saw from the Blues last season. There was a sort of feel good factor around Stamford Bridge and the players fed off that. The game was somewhat marred, however, to the injury to club captain Reece James who went off with a hamstring injury. It is expected that 20-year-old Malo Gusto will come in to replace the Chelsea skipper as he was the one to come on for James against Liverpool. The Blues are expected to make changes in their midfield too with record signing Moises Caicedo expected to come into the side in place of Connor Gallagher, who to his credit played excellently against Liverpool.

West Ham v Chelsea Team Stats

Hammers looking to build on Conference League triumph

Despite it being an incredibly below par season for West Ham domestically, the East London club tasted success on the European stage, defeating Fiorentina 2-1 in the Conference League final. The Hammers finished the Premier League last year in a rather disappointing 14th place, considering the preseason expectation that surrounded the club prior to the 2022/23 season. They struggled defensively last term, shipping 55 goals in the league and they also had difficulties in front of goal, with top scorer Jarrod Bowen scoring just 6 goals for the Hammers. David Moyes will be hoping his side can improve in terms of output in front of goal and that striker Michail Antonio can find some goalscoring form as the new season starts.

Season to forget last time out for Chelsea

The 2022/23 season was a disaster of all shapes and sizes for Chelsea with Blues fans being given not much to cheer about through the whole campaign. The club made their way through an incredible 4 managers throughout the duration of last season as it was the first season since 1995/96 that the club had failed to finish in the top half of the league table. Additionally, it was the team’s lowest league finish since they ended the 1993/94 season in 14th place. The upcoming campaign will also be the first time the club will be without European football for the first time since 2016/17 highlighting how much of a disappointment last season was for the club. They struggled hugely in front of goal, scoring a measly 38 goals in the Premier League.

West Ham v Chelsea Players to Watch

Paqueta the provider ready to shine

Following the departure of West Ham skipper Declan Rice to Arsenal, the Hammers will be looking to his midfield partner Lucas Paqueta to step up and be the man to fill the void left by the Englishman. The Brazilian contributed to Seven goals and assists in 28 games for West Ham last term and David Moyes will be hoping the midfield man can improve on those numbers to elevate his side up to where he wants them to be. Paqueta was the joint most booked player for West Ham last season and currently sits at an inviting 3.10 to be carded in Sunday’s fixture.

Trickster Bowen looks to provide creative spark

Jarrod Bowen was the hero for the Hammers in the Conference League final, netting a 90th minute winner for his side. The Englishman’s output over the last Three seasons in the Premier League has been exceptional, with the winger providing 46 goals and assists across 100 starts in that time. Bowen opened his account for this season with a goal against Bournemouth with a stunning strike from the edge of the area and will be hoping to add to his tally against Chelsea. Bowen is at odds of 2.00 to have over 0.5 shots on target and it could end up being a sensible addition to any West Ham v Chelsea bet builder.

Antonio the main man up top for Hammers

After the transfer of Gianluca Scamacca to Atalanta, West Ham currently find themselves with two recognised senior strikers in their squad, Michail Antonio and Danny Ings. It is looking likely that it will be Antonio who is the man to be preferred by David Moyes and the Jamaican international will be hoping that he can repay the faith paid into him by his boss. Antonio scored 13 goals across all competitions last term for the Hammers and his aim will be to improve on that number and become a consistent goal scorer for West Ham. To have over 1.5 shots on goal, Antonio is at odds of 1.90 and having averaged 1.2 per game in the league last season, he could be a worthwhile addition to a West Ham v Chelsea bet builder.

New boy Jackson on the hunt for first Blues goal

It wasn’t the greatest of starts to life at Chelsea for new boy Nicolas Jackson who struggled in front of goal against Liverpool. The 22-year-old enjoyed a fruitful season in La Liga for Villarreal as he scored 12 goals and provided Four assists and Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that the Senegalese international will be able to rediscover that form in the Premier League for the Blues. Jackson averaged 1.6 shots per game last term for Villarreal and registered 4 in his debut for Chelsea. He looks to be another tasty shots addition to a West Ham v Chelsea bet builder as he is at odds of 1.72 to have over 2.5 shots and that could turn out to be a valuable leg to include.

Is Gusto the man to fill the James void?

It is no secret that last season was a disappointing one for Reece James as he struggled with injury throughout the campaign, even missing the World Cup due to injuries. However, it looked as if his career was back on the up as he performed brilliantly against Liverpool, only to have his game agonisingly cut short by a hamstring problem that is set to leave the England man sidelined for some time. James’ replacement in the Chelsea side looks set to be 20-year-old Frenchman Malo Gusto, who spent the second half of last season back on loan at Lyon after Chelsea signed him from the French side during the January transfer window. Over the course of the 2022/23 season, Gusto averaged Two tackles a game at Lyon and looks to be a player with a bright future at Chelsea if he can put together a decent enough spell in the starting 11.

Caicedo up for proving he’s a worthwhile buy

Questions have certainly been raised in the last week regarding the monumental price tag surrounding the transfer of Moises Caicedo from Brighton to Chelsea for a whopping £111m, which is a new Premier League record. The 21-year-old has excited fans during his time on the south coast and he could be the man Chelsea desire to kick start their season. Caicedo is a tough tackling midfielder who isn’t afraid to put in a challenge, evidenced by his average of 2.7 tackles per game in the league last term for Brighton. The hazard however, that does come with that is that Caicedo is liable to a yellow card, picking up 10 last season for the Seagulls, which was their most from any player in 2022/23. This does bode well though for a West Ham v Chelsea bet builder as Caicedo sits at odds of 3.60 to be booked, and should he start, could end up being a very intelligent leg to add on.

West Ham vs Chelsea matchups to watch

Michail Antonio v Levi Colwill

This one could end up being an intriguing tussle as these two are physical players and it will likely be an intense battle. Antonio will attempt to hold up the ball to allow his teammates to make runs off him but the Jamaican is going to struggle to do so against Colwill whos game plan will be to suffocate Antonio of the ball and ensure he has as little touches of the ball as possible. Last term, Colwill impressed mightily on loan at Brighton and boss Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that he can emulate his form in 2023/24 for his Chelsea side. Colwill is a player who enjoys the ball at his feet and has an exceptional eye for a pass, averaging 67.5 passes per game last season for Brighton and the Blues will be looking to take full advantage of it.

Nayef Aguerd v Nicolas Jackson

At the opposite end of the pitch to the previous match up, Nayef Aguerd up against Nicolas Jackson could be a battle well worth keeping an eye on. Both players possess a real turn of pace off the ball and that could wind up adding a different aspect to the game that will excite fans. Aguerd’s time at West Ham got off to a shaky start, with the Moroccan international missing the start of last season through injury. Since his comeback though, he has really settled into life at the London Stadium much to the relief of Hammers boss David Moyes. Aguerd averaged an impressive 1.5 tackles per game in the league last season for West Ham and he will be looking to continue that form going into 2023/24. It will be intriguing to see how the matchup between him and Jackson will pan out and it could be one that could be decisive in the end result of the game.

Tomas Soucek v Enzo Fernandez

The middle of the pitch usually tends to be where a football game is lost and won and it is likely that this game will be no different. Both teams will line up with strong midfields as they look to win the battle of wit and determination. One key midfield battle in particular to look out for is West Ham’s Tomas Soucek up against Chelsea’s World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez. Tough tackler Soucek will be out to take control of the game after impressing last week in the Hammers’ draw at Bournemouth, whereas Fernandez’s tenacious desire could cause the Czech international some serious problems. With the battle between these two players likely to be an intense one, it could well be worth looking at adding either of these two to be booked in a West Ham v Chelsea bet builder. Fernandez sits at odds of 3.60 to be carded and Soucek is more of a longshot with odds of 5.50 for the Hammers midfield to be shown a booking.
