Wolves v Crystal Palace
In this article
Leg 1: Wolves Double Chance
This feels like make or break for the Wolves. They remain winless although head into the match with some momentum after an improbable comeback last week against Brighton, from 0-2 down to draw very late. Wolves have had a difficult fixture list but now things look much more manageable on paper. Fans have been patient with manager Gary O’Neil but will expect a win soon and this is a match they should target.
Until last week, Palace had also failed to win in the Premier League this season and they have a miserable away record with three defeats out of four. With doubts over the fitness of key man Eberechi Eze, Wolves should be good enough to get a point at least. With home advantage, they may well finally get their first win, but taking them on the draw double chance vs a struggling Palace seems decent security.
Leg 2: Over 4.5 Cards
This is going to be a crunch match for both teams with everything on the line. Wolves have been the third most penalized team this season, obtaining 29 yellow cards. They’ve yet to pick up a red but have several key offenders such as Joao Gomes, Nelson Semedo and Ryan Ait Nouri. Wolves average the most fouls per game of any team in the Premier League (13.60).
Referee Anthony Taylor could have his hands full so taking over 4.5 cards looks like another strong addition to any Wolves vs Crystal Palace bet builder. Taylor Averages over five cards per game this season although the 14 he dished out in one match does distort his average. Taylor won’t mess around though and will deliver appropriate punishment when required.
Palace have racked up 22 cards this season so will more than likely contribute towards this card line. There could be some desperate challenges and cynical behaviour considering what is at stake.
Leg 3: Matheus Cunha To Have 1+ Shots On Target
This is a huge period for Wolves striker Matheus Cunha. In a difficult run of fixtures, he has caught the eye with some strong performances and is their leading scorer with four goals. He netted a fortunate deflected equaliser last week but if you don’t shoot you don’t score and this is something he likes doing regularly. Cunha averages over three shots per 90 mins in the Premier League this term, the most of any Wolves player.
The Brazilian fires 1.27 shots on target per 90 mins and this is a figure which should increase over the next few weeks. He could be targeted to score anytime here but a safer option is to take Cunha to have one or more shots on target. His over 2.5 shot line is also a consideration but at home in a must win game then he really needs to be hitting the target at least once. We should see a focused performance from Wolves’ leading marksman.
Leg 4: Jean-Phillipe Mateta to have 1+ shots on target
One of the hottest players at the back end of last season was Palace striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta. He was unstoppable since the introduction of new manager Oliver Glasner and he took that form into the Olympics where he also fired strongly for France. It has been a frustratingly inconsistent season for Mateta so far with a brace of goals vs Norwich in the EFL Cup and Leicester in the Premier League being the main highlight.
The loss of Michael Olise cut off some of his supply line and maybe he was simply fatigued after a long summer. Mateta has looked more himself in recent weeks though. He scored the winner against Spurs last Sunday and looked lively away to Forest on the previous occasion.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him hit the back of the net again here but a more suitable bet builder option is to take over 0.5 shots on target. Last season he had a very high accuracy ratio of over 65% shots on target and he averaged 1.06 per 90 mins. Those numbers have been down overall this season but that is mostly due to his aforementioned slow start. This is a good chance for him to have a shot on target in three straight Premier League games against statistically the worst defence in the division.
He might have wrestled penalty duty off Eze as well which adds even more credibility to his claim.
