Premier League (August 16th – September 1st)
Cole Palmer performed sensationally last season exceeding all expectations. He played without pressure and some may doubt him to replicate that form with the pressure on him but we don’t think so. Palmer found the back of the net when the pressure was highest and his country needed him most. He also cleared 20 goals last season.
In terms of fixtures, Chelsea play host to holders Man City on the opening day. Usually a formidable opponent, City shipped 4 to Chelsea here last season with Palmer scoring. They then face Wolves, another of Palmer’s victims last season followed by Crystal Palace, a side with real quality who might struggle more without Olise. Palmer has 3 great opportunities here to score and even just 1 brace does the trick for this leg.
Isak has already hit the back of the net twice in pre season and realistically should shine this season. The Big Swede started 27 games last season for the Toon, playing in 30 and still managed a ridiculous 21 goals. His finished is second to none and if he gets the chance created then it almost feels inevitable that he finds the back of the net twice in the first 3.
It’s not like the 21 goals aren’t backed up by underlying numbers too with an xG of 20.29. He could well cash this bet on the opening day against a pretty poor Southampton side for this level who conceded 63 in the Championship last season. If that’s not enough he then faces Bournemouth in GW2 and then Spurs in GW3, sides with quality but not as much defensively and who play expansively.
The signing of Dom Solanke is an interesting one for ange and spurs. The centre forward hasn’t particularly lived up to his hype from the start of his career but his last season at Bournemouth was a gem. He scored 19 goals in his 37 starts and earned himself a £65m move to a top 6 club. He’s now primed to start well under Ange who has already hinted his signing will lead the line to kick start proceedings.
Spurs kick start the season with Leicester away, probably one of the easier fixtures on the calendar. They were weak defensively in the championship, have lost their manager and will struggle even more at this level. They then face a resilient Everton outfit, who struggle with pace in behind followed by a Newcastle side who leaked goals for fun last season. We love the look of Solanke to dominate from the start.
Declan Rice just got better and better in the midfield last year, but was still prone to a foul or two, going on a hot streak to end the season. The Arsenal star man averaged 0.9 fouls per game in the Premier League last season, a sharp rise up from his final season at West Ham where he averaged 0.6 fouls per game.
Arsenal open the season with Wolves, Aston Villa and then finally playing hosts to Brighton. Wolves have plenty of energy in the midfield with ball carriers such as Mario Lemina and Pablo Sarabia creating overloads. Villa showed their quality last season and have added the combative Amadou Onana to their ranks. Brighton are an exciting energetic prospect with Fabian Hurlezer at the helm also providing an intense midfield battle.
Rice committed a foul in each if his last 8 Premier League appearances of the 23/24 season, including a combined 4 fouls against Wolves, Villa and Brighton. He’s nicely priced to foul at least 3 times in the first 3 having fouled twice in the opening game last year.
