Wednesday 21st July, Scottish League Cup Betting Tips & Match Previews
Did anyone get any winners out of my Scottish League Cup write-up yesterday?
Before I begin with the matches, it’s important to get clued up on the format of the Scottish League Cup as that can obviously impact odds and any bets you might place.
It’s a group stage with eight groups, the winners of each group and three best runners-up will progress into the last 16 to be joined by the five Scottish clubs competing in Europe.
What’s bizarre is if a match finishes a draw it goes to penalties to win a 2nd point. So both sides get a point for drawing then the winner on pens gets a bonus point.
Anyway, here’s some notes on two of the matches which stood out to me:
Edinburgh City v Falkirk
I quite like the look of Falkirk at 1.57 for an away win. Edinburgh City are in League Two (league below Falkirk) and they’re already eliminated from the competition, they have no chance of getting enough points to progress.
Although Falkirk are currently in League One, they are traditionally a Scottish Championship/Scottish Prem side. They’ve had a few bad seasons of mismanagement but things seem to be turning with the appointment of new manager Paul Sheerin.
Having read up on a fan forum it seems his recruitment has been good over the summer and the performances so far in the Scottish League Cup have been very encouraging.
They demolished Albion Rovers 5-1 in their first League Cup match then came close to getting a result against Championship side Hamilton. Falkirk led 1-0 until the last 10 minutes and ended up losing 2-1.
Edinburgh have lost 2 and drawn 1 so far, they’ve only scored 1 goal. I also read about how Edinburgh play on a plastic pitch which will be no stranger to Falkirk as they also play on the same surface.
Falkirk are on 3 points with two games remaining, a win tonight gives them a showdown with Ayr United to fight out top spot and progression into the round of 16. Away win looks a very safe bet to me.
Montrose v Dundee
Dundee on maximum points after two matches, on track to top the group.
They’ve only actually played one match, they got awarded a 3-0 win in the 2nd match after Ross County were unable to fulfill the fixture because of Covid.
Dundee are newly promoted to the Scottish Prem and from what I’ve read it looks like there’s a lot of optimism they’ll have a good season. Including friendlies and going back into last season, they’ve only lost 1 from their last 15 matches.
A 3-0 win against Forfar, 3-0 against Leyton Orient then a 2-2 draw with West Ham make up their three pre-season results. They then kicked off the Scottish League Cup with a 4-0 win at home to Brora Rangers.
Montrose are in League One in Scotland and have had a mixed start to the League Cup. They beat Brora 3-0 in the opener which was a good result but then failed to beat League Two Forfar, the match ended a draw but then Forfar won the penalty shootout to get the bonus point.
Montrose are on 4 points after 2 matches so still a slim chance they can progress but they have the two toughest matches next – Dundee tonight then Ross County at the weekend. They really have to win tonight to have any chance so we should see an open match.
Last season’s stats also back up the prediction of goals. Dundee averaged 3.30 goals per game last season in the Championship, Montrose averaged 3.25 goals per game in last season’s League One.
I think Dundee will win this one and I can see there being plenty goals. Dundee to win with over 1.5 goals is 1.50 or if you want something bigger, Dundee to win with over 2.5 goals is 1.83.
