Who should win the Ballon d’Or 2021? It’s always a good debate and there’s always plenty of opinions floating around the internet and social media. Should it simply be the best player in the world who wins the award or should someone who’s a huge influence on their club and teammates be considered?
I’ve had a look at the odds for the top 10 favourites and I’m going to let you know my thoughts on each player’s chances. Now that this summer’s international tournaments have been wrapped up, we’ve got a clear idea who may have one hand on the trophy.
10 – Kylian Mbappe Ballon d’Or 2021 Winner Odds: 33/1
Kylian Mbappe comes in at 10th on this list and I think he’s got no chance of winning the award this year as he’s been disappointing on the biggest of stages. He didn’t have a major impact when PSG needed him in the Champions League semi-final vs Man City and he had a horrendous time with France at this summer’s Euros. He didn’t score a single goal which is bizarre, and he missed the crucial penalty vs Switzerland as they were knocked out.
No chance for Mbappe this year but he’ll definitely win this award at some point during his career… I’d bet on that.
9 – Neymar Ballon d’Or 2021 Winner Odds: 25/1
For similar reasons as Mbappe, I think Neymar has no chance of winning the award for 2021 also. Whilst he had a decent Copa America on a personal level, scoring 2 goals and picking up 3 assists, it ended in tears as rivals Argentina edged them out in the final. It was probably made worse that the game was played at the Maracana Stadium in his home country.
Neymar is yet to win the Ballon d’Or award and he won’t be this year either…
8 – Jorginho Ballon d’Or 2021 Winner Odds: 20/1
Jorginho is the boy! I’m in a love-hate relationship with this man as he helped the Blues win the Champions League but also broke English hearts in the final of Euro 2020. Also the fact that he should’ve been sent off for his extra time challenge on Jack Grealish leaves an even bitter taste for most people.
He doesn’t play the most attractive role in football so he’s never really going to beat the likes of Messi to the award, although winning both the UCL and Euros is an incredible feat.
7 – Kevin De Bruyne Ballon d’Or 2021 Winner Odds: 16/1
De Bruyne had a good season personally as he won the PFA Player of the Year award, however that’s not going to be enough for him to put in a challenge for the Ballon d’Or award. Man City and De Bruyne bottled it in the final of the Champions League and the ‘Golden Generation’ of Belgian players failed to deliver yet again.
6 – Raheem Sterling Ballon d’Or 2021 Winner Odds: 16/1
Similar to De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling would’ve been in the Ballon d’Dor conversation had City won the Champions League and England brought football home by winning the Euros. Sterling was the standout Englishman this summer and was the main reason for us winning most of our games.
5 – Ngolo Kante Ballon d’Or 2021 Winner Odds: 16/1
I absolutely adore Ngolo Kante, not just because I’m a Chelsea fan, but because he’s one of the most humble and likeable characters in the sport. He’s an unbelievable talent but you just know he’s never ever the loudest in the room.
I did some reading and it seems that Kante was actually the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or after we won the Champions League back in May. Unfortunately though, France doing poorly at the Euros has most likely hurt his chances. I do think he has a great chance of making the shortlist and the top three.
4 – Harry Kane Ballon d’Or 2021 Winner Odds: 9/1
Harry Kane is among the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or, and with all due respect, I can’t understand why. Granted, he did register some incredible goals and assists stats throughout the last Premier League season, but he hasn’t got anything to show for it from Tottenham yet. He also had a slow start to the Euros and lost in the final.
Harry Kane is one of the best forwards in world football but he needs to join a more successive club and win trophies before he’s considered for this award in my opinion.
3 – Cristiano Ronaldo Ballon d’Or 2021 Winner Odds: 8/1
Cristiano Ronaldo will always come close to winning the Ballon d’Or, so long as he’s playing at a high level. Ronaldo is super human at 36-years-old, he won the Golden Boot at Euro 2020 and equalled Ali Daei’s record for the most international goals in history! It’s just a matter of time before he breaks that and sets more ridiculous records.
Ultimately, not winning the league with Juventus or the Euros with Portugal will damage his chances and he’ll lose out to Messi once more.
2 – Robert Lewandowski Ballon d’Or 2021 Winner Odds: 7/1
Robert Lewandowski is yet to reach the Ballon d’Or podium but that might change this year, although I don’t believe he’ll win it. Lewandowski scored a total of 41 league goals in the 2020/21 season and won the European Golden Shoe award for that year. Unfortunately for him, he would’ve won the previous Ballon d’Or but it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
1 – Lionel Messi Ballon d’Or 2021 Winner Odds: 1/2
Lionel Messi is the odds on favourite to win a SEVENTH (7th) Ballon d’Or award which is incredible to say the least and I don’t think you can look past him. He’s 34 now and he’s showing no signs of slowing down, the fact that he signed a new 5-year deal with Barcelona proves that.
Messi also won his first major international trophy this summer as he led Argentina to a Copa America triumph, they beat their rivals Brazil in the final!
