Tuesday 20th July, Scottish League Cup Predictions
Partick Thistle Vs Dumbarton
Dumbarton travel to Partick Thistle tonight with 0 points on the board in Group H, they’ve struggled with covid issues and playing issues in their three matches so far, sitting -8 on goal difference at the foot of the table. They only had 3 substitutes available for Saturday’s game so there’s no opportunity for any rest or rotation here and there’s very little motivation given that they’re already out of the competition.
Recently promoted Partick Thistle will be eyeing this one up as a chance to build upon their 2-1 win against Stenhousemuir on Saturday. They’ve still got a decent chance of qualifying but they do need a win here. With that in mind, the difference in quality and Dumbarton’s issues I’d expect a pretty comfortable Partick win. A -1 handicap at 1.8 is a good shout, alternatively, a home win and over 2.5 goals at 1.73 is also a good option.
Brechin Vs Alloa Athletic
Highland league Brechin City FC host Alloa Athletic in group D. Both sides were relegated from their divisions last season and they sit last and second last respectively in the group.
Brechin City FC on 0 points and -8 goal difference are the group whipping boys, being comfortably beaten by Livingston and Raith Rovers before losing to Cowdenbeath after going down to 10 men.
Alloa kicked off their campaign with a home loss to Cowdenbeath but then gave us one of the shock results of the cup so far by beating premiership side Livingston 2-1 at home.
It has to be goals in this one for me, if I was having goals galore acca today this would be top of my list. Brechin have conceded 3 or more in each of their games so far and that could easily happen again here, especially against an Alloa side who got 2 against Livingston. Brechin did score twice in their 5 goal thriller with Cowdenbeath so they could still play their part here. Over 2.5 goals looks solid at 1.57.
Annan Athletic Vs Queen’s Park
Group F sees bottom of the group Annan Athletic host second place Queen’s Park. Just two points separate the teams and with just four points between 1st and 5th there’s all to play for in this group.
Annan have struggled in the group so far, their two points coming courtesy of a penalty shootout win against Airdrieonians as in this competition you gain an extra point for a shootout win. Pretty mental but it’s worth remembering in case you’re looking at tables and are a little lost.
Queen’s Park kicked off their league cup campaign with an impressive win against Queen of the South before losing to premiership side Motherwell, following that with a dull 0-0 draw with Airdrieonians, also missing out on the extra point.
Queen’s Park went undefeated last season against Annan Athletic and I’ve got to back them again here. Both teams have struggled for goals in the last few fixtures but I think the extra quality Queen’s Park have should see them win this one.
Elgin City Vs Kelty Hearts
Kelty Hearts, the Scottish League 2 pre-season favourites, currently sit 3rd in the group and a win here could push them above Arbroath in 2nd. Led by ex-Rangers and Middlesbrough midfielder Kevin Thompson, they’ve strengthened their team with players such as Joe Cardle and Jamie Barjonas, who can comfortably play at a higher level, even someone with my Scottish football knowledge knows that.
Elgin City have struggled big time in the group, sitting on 0 points and fresh off the back of a 6-1 hammering from Dundee Utd. Although they’re a Premiership side, it looks likely that Kelty will also prove a pretty formidable opponent.
Both these teams play in the same league, but I can only see Kelty winning here. They looked more than a match for premiership side Dundee Utd when they played and I think the quality they have should secure them a win tonight and they could easily run in a few goals. Both over 2.5 (1.53) and a Kelty win (1.8) look good so feel free to make your choice based on what you fancy or what fits your bet.
