Scottish Premiership: Saturday Preview 31/07
UK domestic football returns this weekend with the Scottish league’s beginning their new campaigns on Saturday afternoon. I’m far from an expert on the Scottish Premiership but I’ve spent time looking at other previews as well as fan forums to see what we should expect when the action gets underway.
I’ve already covered the Rangers game which kicks off at 1:30pm on Saturday and can be watched on Sky Sports. However, I also thought I’d delve into the 3pm’s with the unfamiliar clubs to provide you guys with more value and hopefully pick up more footballing knowledge myself.
Dundee vs St Mirren
First up will be Dundee vs St Mirren at Dens Park, Dundee will go into the match as slight favourites but there’s virtually nothing in it and the odds suggest that these two will be very evenly matched.
I was quite surprised to see that Dundee are the favourites because they were promoted from the league below last season and St Mirren didn’t have the worst season in the Premiership, they ended up finishing 7th which was their most successful top flight finish in over 30 years. As well as that, I read that St Mirren have won 5 of their previous 7 meetings with Dundee, so make of that what you will.
The thing that Dundee have in their favour is that their season has already begun with the Scottish League Cup and they’re in great form if you include those matches. They played a total of four in the group stages and won every single one, scoring a total of 14 goals which was an average of 3.50 per game.
I had a quick look at a fan forum and a St Mirren fan was crediting Dundee for the fact that they’re in good form and scoring for fun, although he made a good argument that they were scored against much weaker clubs and this weekend’s Premiership meeting is a completely different kettle of fish.
I wouldn’t like to predict a winner from this fixture as you can make a good argument for both sides. I do think there’s good value in goals though, and I quite like over 1.5 goals at 1.33 and both teams to score at 1.87. Both teams have scored in 10 of the last 12 meetings between these two in all competitions, I fancy the trend to continue.
Ross County vs St Johnstone
The only other 3pm game is Ross County vs St Johnstone with the visitors being favourites for the win and priced around Evens to get 3 points to start the new season. The mad thing about St Johnstone which I can’t seem to get over is the fact that they’ll be playing Galatasaray in the Europa League over the course of the next couple of weeks… Mental!
Anyway, before that they’ve got to focus on their trip to Ross County on Saturday afternoon. St Johnstone will hope to build on the amazing season they had last time out, they picked up two domestic trophies and managed to finish 5th in the Scottish Premiership, an incredible achievement in all fairness.
Ross County experienced a dodgy start to the 2021/22 season and Covid wrecked havoc within the squad and they were made to forfeit a couple of their Scottish League Cup games. They’ve won a couple of games since, but they weren’t against names that you’d be impressed by.
I’m quite liking the price of St Johnstone to win and I think there’s a few good reasons to back them. Ross County tend to struggle when hosting St Johnstone, they’ve failed to win any of their last 8 attempts which is a mad statistic, draw no bet could be another option to consider. A win for St Johnstone would provide a great amount of momentum going into what will be an extremely difficult trip to Istanbul next Thursday night.
