Girona to win

The fairytale continues in La Liga as Girona chase down the most unlikely of league titles.

Girona are flying, they’ve won 13/16 games this season and the only team to have beaten them is Real Madrid, who are 1 point ahead at this stage but a win tonight lifts Girona back to the top of the table.

It’s incredible really. They amassed 49 points last season, and finished 10th. They already have 41 points from this campaign.

Girona are owned by the City Group, and through a combination of excellent recruitment and brilliant management, they’ve become an absolute force. They’ve not just been scraping by either, in their last match they won 4-2 in the Nou Camp.

It’s a young squad, playing with so much confidence. Their goals have come from all over the pitch, and they’re not reliant on one player.

Artem Dovbyk leads the charts with 8 goals and 4 assists but perhaps the true breakout star has been 19 year old Savio. He’s on loan from Troyes, and a lot of big sides will be eyeing up a move for him come the summer. He’s got 4 goals and 5 assists this season, and catches the eye with his quick feet and superb dribbling.

As for Alaves, a real key stat here is how bad they are away from home. They are winless in their last 23 La Liga away games, losing 17, that’s a run that stretches back to October 2021.

This season, their away record reads: 0-3-5. They’ve managed to score just 4 goals as well.

Alaves average 2.38 cards per game. They’ve had 2 or more in 88% of their away matches this season, and they haven’t left a single away game without getting a card.

Girona draw plenty of cards from their opponents too, they draw 2.83 on average and at home that rises to 3.13. 88% of their home matches have seen their opponents receive 2+ cards.
