Walsall v Stevenage

The EFL Trophy can be a minefield at times with teams likely to rotate, but Stevenage are one of the sides who should be going full strength. So up against League Two opposition they look a great price to get a result.

Postponements caused by the international break means they won't be playing a league game until October 10th. They'll need to keep their top players ticking over so it makes sense to go strong here.

The same can't be said for Walsall, they're currently 2nd in League Two and have a big game against Tranmere on Saturday. As a side chasing promotion they could do without the extra games this competition brings so rotating to keep fresh for the league makes sense.

Even without that in mind, Stevenage are the superior side sat in the league above. I'd anticipate they can do enough to avoid defeat anyway, but if they face a weakened Walsall side the task gets that bit easier.

Bradford v Newcastle United FC U21

Newcastle U21 to Score

Bradford are massive odds-on favourites for this, but it's a game and competition they could do without so I think the match will be closer than the betting suggests.

Bradford have played 10 games in 45 days, and this will be their 3rd in just 10 days. This game can offer them a well-needed rest, especially given that they are chasing promotion and are a win vs Peterborough away from reaching the League Cup quarter-final.

The stats don't suggest Bradford will concede, they've kept a clean sheet in three straight games, but this won't be the same side we've been seeing so far. They look certain to rotate. Newcastle's U21s are having a tough time of it in their own league, but they did put three past York in the last round of this competition.

It's also worth noting that in 11/12 games featuring an U21 side, they've scored at least once, and eight of the nine U21 sides have hit the 2+ goals line. Newcastle's youngsters are a great price to find the net on that evidence.

Barnsley v Leeds United U21

Like Bradford, Barnsley have had to endure a tough schedule with this being their 4th game in a 10 day span. Whilst they could do with a morale boost after going winless in their last three it's a game they could do without. They may well use it as a chance to rest players and regroup.

Even without that, they're hardly solid in defence. They've kept just one clean sheet this season and have shipped nine goals across their last three league games.

As mentioned, the U21 sides are scoring at a good rate in this competition. Only one of nine sides has failed to find the net across 12 games so far. Leeds are decent scorers too, in their league division they've scored in all four games so far and hit 2+ goals in three of those.

Wigan v Blackpool

Either Team to Score 2+ Goals

I'm essentially treating this one as a League One tie, neither side plays this weekend and both are winless in three so the game offers both a chance at a morale boost.

Blackpool are the team to focus on, they've shown they can just as easily score two as they can concede two. They've played nine games this season and eight of them have seen them either score or concede twice, with their last two seeing them manage both in the same game.

The underlying data backs it up too. They've got by far the worst xGA in League One and despite shipping 11 across their last four games they've still conceded fewer than the data suggests they should've done. That said, they are also the league's third top scorers with 13 across seven games.

Wigan are sat bottom of the league and haven't scored in three, so it would be easy to suggest just focussing on Blackpool to score. However, the data suggests they've been unlucky. They're creating 1.55 xG per game, implying they should have scored 10-11 goals by now, double their actual tally of five.

Keep creating chances to the level that they are and their luck will turn. It could well be that coming up a Blackpool that concedes chances for fun is the catalyst.
